Travinski is a very average defensive catcher and not a great framer. Milazzo was a noticeable improvement back there and Neal was slightly better as a freshman so I'd assume he'd be much better this year. Travinski is just huge and slow - anything that misses big he can't get in front of. He can whip it to second pretty well, but he allows more passed balls which is a bigger deal.
Also, this is picky and not why I think others are better at the position, but I hate how he runs off for strike 3 before the ump calls strike 3. He did this quite a bit when it wasn't called a strike and I have to think that pisses the ump off.
Trav provides a ton of juice to the roster though in terms of his batting and his general crazy personality in the dugout. Damn happy he's coming back.

This is good news. This will allow Neal and Milazzo to hold down the catcher position and keep the two of them healthy while allowing Jared and Travinski to be in the lineup at 1B and DH for the season and only needing to catch if an injury occurs.

You think he was catching as a left hander don’t you?
I’m not going to be too hard on him, because I was thinking, “This dude has a point.”

Neal catches weekends. Milazzo midweeks and end of weekend games with a lead. Travinski DH.
By the time you factor in injuries and who is hot at the plate, this will sort itself out. Like everyone else, I expect Travinski will get a lot of DH, or maybe first base, work. I don’t expect to have the offensive lineup we had last year, so we will need Travinski’s power.

What about Travinski at 1st? At least in some games.
He played some in HS and he played it this season vs McNeese.

Just reading this board since the Milazzo news...this is what most people think will happen
Neal starting catcher & Milazzo backup
Jones, Travinski, & maybe even Frey as the 1B/DH options. Funny thing is that all 3 of them can play catcher as well. We actually have 5 options at catcher.

All 3 catchers coming back is such a boon for the pitching staff and for the coaches.

i want Travinksi to get more than 100 at bats
What if all they throw him is breaking balls?

Trav needs to be disciplined at the plate. Not many pitchers can throw curve balls for strikes consistently. Even if they do, a hitter can adjust. What makes the breaking ball so effective is that the hitter can't tell if the pitch is a fastball or breaking ball. The really good hitters recognize it with enough time to adjust their swing.
I think Jones had trouble with breaking g balls more than Trav. I think Trav may have just been in a slump towards the end of the year - quite possibly due to injury...
