a home run needs to go over the wall/fence

It's a homer if it hits on the top right? 99% of the time it'll go out if it does, but if it were to somehow not, it would still be a Homer, right?

The confusion stems from older parks that had a yellow circular pad on the very top face of the wall and some ball park ground rules would say,”if a ball hits that yellow pad it’s a home run.” Which meant it pretty much guaranteed to continue as a homer if the pad wasn’t there. Now the top front face of the wall is painted yellow which allows a clear picture against objects behind of where the top of the wall ends.

If you look closely at the replay, the outfielder would have probably made the catch but his glove hit the underside of the yellow overhanging padding.
Another good luck moment for the Tigers !

Usually isn't unless it leaves the park. There are places where there's a ground rule saying yellow line is a homer which might be why he's confused.

That’s what I’m talking about.

It’s not good luck that the fence wasn’t further back.

I think there were a few parks that had a yellow line at one time on a flat fence where the line indicated a home run, but even those had to hit above the line, if my recollection is correct. Now they are usually padding atop the fence to indicate if a ball clears the fence and then bounces back into play after hitting an object behind the fence (like the Jones homerun earlier in the CWS)

only if it goes over the wall after hitting the yellow line.

If a ball strikes that line and goes over the fence (even if it hits another object above/over/behind the wall and comes back into the field of play) then it is a home run. If it hits on the line and doesn't touch anything beyond the wall and remains within the field of play, then it is in play.

The broadcasters were too busy saying how the outfielder should have caught the ball to explain the ground rules.

Hit the middle of the yellow stripe on top of the fence. Has to hit the top of it or clear to be a HR.

You people are insufferable. She clearly stated they had no audio and wondering why they kept looking at the replay....jeezzzee

Ball hit top of yellow trim on fence. Ball was still in play. They kept looking at it because it was so close and of course the media always has to be dramatic. 6 more inches, it would have gone out.

If the wind wasn’t blowing in, it’s a home run.

Milam smashed that ball.

No doubt

How about the one Brown hit. That Ball looked like it was going to the moon and it was a routine fly out... that wind was strong
