Nice to see the cage spiffed up for Vargas & Brown. Wouldn't want the window leaking on tv, the next time an INS deportee needs "talking off the ledge" inside Mike's crib.

'Twas before your time born in '89.

An International LSU student whom's time in the US was near expiration, freaked out and locked himself in Mike's cage in the late 1980s. And while HC Dale Brown and Jose Vargas tried to coax him from the cage, quite a few LSU students had gathered nearby, a few of whom began a sarcastic "Tigerbait" chant if I recall correctly?

It dragged out for a while, because WAFB and WBRZ made out there with tv crews to report it.

No, Mike didn't eat him..must have been full?

As for the Tulane gag, I believe that was way back in the early part of the 20th century? Or maybe 1950s? Before my day.

Ah I gotcha. I just remember hearing about that didn't know when it was.

Never heard that story about the dude going in the cage though.

The other day I was over by Mike's cage and his trainer came over and went into the inner cage part. She got a bamboo stick and was tickling his nose with it, then he would run around crazy like a kitten. It was pretty hilarious (cool story bro i know)

yeah, trainers generally know what they're doing. but every once in a while, you get a Siegfried/Roy or Steve Irwin situation.

Wonder why they are painting the back wall white since everything else is that tan/brown color scheme throughout the habitat?

I would hope given the beige of the other walls and Graham Tower, that LSU isn't trying to match the PMAC's white, but that the white is merely primer?

Might have to get Jason and Robert Graham to ask that Mike's cage match daddy's tower in color scheme?

Gotta just be primer? Mike will sh!te stain or mud smear that white in no time.

I know i'd be a little nervous. one of them should snap a twig once in a while when the others aren't looking.

Maybe they have a spotter ..kinda like the guy guarding the bull pen area during baseball?

In the early 80's, during Tulane week, he was let out of his cage, smashed a cop car and a couple of small pine trees before they got him near Bernie Moore.

ETA:

Mike IV (1976–1990)
Mike IV, originally called Jerry, was born at Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida in 1974. He was donated by August A. Busch III and was two years old when he came to LSU in August 1976. One memorable incident involving Mike IV began in the early-morning hours of November 28, 1981 when pranksters cut the locks on Mike's cage. The tiger roamed freely for hours, attacked a small tree, and appeared to be enjoying himself before becoming trapped in the Track Stadium near his cage. Three tranquilizer shots later, the wandering mascot was returned to his home without further incident and awoke without ill effects.[4] Mike IV reigned for 14 years and retired in 1990 to the Baton Rouge Zoo where he lived until his death in 1995 at the age of 21.

Ok it looked like that white was just a base for a new coat of beige. Walked back over there after class today:

And it looks like they're getting ready to do the same thing to the outside walls of the cage, because all those little plaques are covered up now:

And I guess they finished working on the windows:

Now, I know everyone has been talking about those $2,000 windows for Tiger Stadium, but I can tell you right now I would pay 2,000 bucks for them to get rid of this atrocity and make it the old Tiger face, the one on the helmet. I mean this is just repulsive

Seriously the tiger looks high

Thanks for the pics, Robbie. I'm a bigger fan of the eye than any of the heads. I wish the eye was the logo for everything LSU.

Thanks for posting the pics Robbie, great job man I'm glad that LSU has decided to maintain the habitat and keep it looking good and taking pride in the facility. Now if only LSU would do the same for Tiger Stadium. I'm no expert but I just can't get over how LSU has let Tiger Stadium become such a crap hole over the last several decades. On top of the new windows I wish they would prime and paint the entire stadium inside and out and bring it up to the place it should be, but don't know if they will do that.

I am really glad they are fixing this, don't get me wrong. I wish they could use some money to pay to keep some professors. My daughter is in school and it saddens me the university system is in such bad shape. It reminds me of when I started school in the early 80's. they raised tuition costs every single semester I was in school...
