Hopefully you guys will excuse my ignorance for asking this question, but I just don't know the answer. Why does the QB always ID the mike LB before the snap?

I thought they were identifying where they believed the blitz or pressure to be coming from, not necessarily the middle linebacker.

I am sure that someone will tell me that I am wrong. It is the rant after all.....no one can be correct on anything.

I've never noticed a QB identifying the Mike LB specifically (but that's not to say it's not happening)...

I'd hazard a guess that the Mike's position is a key indicator for the opposing offense in identifying the defense's alignment in regards to what protection should be called.

I think this is correct. And if the defense is in a 3-4 alignment, the identity of the Mike LB isn't always clear to the offensive linemen.

At the start of the decade, did you ever see the QB point at the crowd to ask the defensive back if he would hit it...and then the wide receiver would point to the defensive back and say my quarterback is asking you a question

ok first most blocking schemes are called by the center. if anything the qb is pointing out blitz pick up to the rb. most blitzs are hidden until after the snap.

Blitz pick up and pointing it out to running back. Makes the audible changes for the line

Exactly as many have said...QB's will call out on nearly every play the number of the mike linebacker...i.e.; 56 is mike. It is to aid the offensive line in its protection on passing plays and runblocking to assist the RB in getting through the linebackers to the secondary.
