Miami D-LINE (In Depth)

As Fall Camp is approaching, we can now turn our attention to Miami. Many of us are anxious to see how the offense performs on opening day. This will be part 1 of a 3 part series I’ll do to take a look at the 3 defensive units of DL, LB, and DB.
Here’s a breakdown of what kind of DL LSU is going up against in Week 1: (Changes could occur in Fall Camp, but this is a projected Depth Chart)
D-LINE
DE- Demetrius Jackson ... 6’3 260lbs Sr. Sat out this spring after having surgery on a torn meniscus. In 2017 he played in 7 games before getting hurt. As the backup to Joe Jackson, he was a solid contributor who logged 18 tackles, 7.5 TFL, 3.5 Sacks, 2 PBU, and 1 interception. We know how injuries can affect a player’s performance, but he is a solid player when healthy.
DT- Gerald Willis ... 6’4 285lb Sr. We all know about his recruitment and off the field issues. Miami expects a big year out of him, but that will remain to be seen.
DT- Pat Bethel ... 6’3 272lb Jr. Bethel is taking over after the departures of McIntosh and Norton to the NFL. In 2017 he played in 11 games and recorded 18 tackles and 1 forced fumble.
DE- Joe Jackson ... 6’5 258lb Jr. Miami’s best player on the DL and lone returning starter in this unit. Very good pass rusher. In his first 2 college seasons he logged 82 tackles, 21 TFl, and 14 sacks.
**Notables who will push for PT include:
DT- Jon Ford (So.),
DT- Nesta Silvera (Fr. and the #2 DT in the country)
DT- Tito Odenigbo (Grad Transfer)
DE- Johnathan Garvin (So.)
DE- Scott Patchan (Jr.)
DE- Greg Rousseau (Fr.)
OVERALL GRADE: B
Defensive end is the strongpoint of the Hurricane DL. If we can contain Joe Jackson I like our chances in pass protection vs the other lineman. The question marks are Demetrius Jackson post injury and which Willis shows up? If 5 Star Willis shows up, our OL will have to be strong. If the normal Willis shows up we should be able to get an interior rushing attack going.
Feel free to add your grades and any added information.

Thanks. I look forward to you other two post about their defense.

Jackson is the only one I'd be worried with. If Gerald Willis starts it'll show where they are as a unit.

Willis is gonna be sky high for this game. I bet he’s read so much shite talking about him from us. It’s all warranted too

Miami is a little bigger than the weights you listed. UM Sports site list Willis at 300lbs.
Our OL will needed to push their shite in early and often and establish the running game. I think we can do that with the hogs we have on the OL.

If les were coaching i would be pretty scared of LSU if I were Miami. A good Run heavy up the middle would break that That D line outweighing them on average 40 to 50 pounds or so. After seeing this it would not surprise me if Playcalling reflects this more than the fanbase would like in this game.

I'll allow it.

looks like they only return 1 good DL

Does Joe Jackson wear shoes?

LSU should be able to run all over that undersized D-line.

To the contrary, I actually think our OL is better than their DL. I think we will be able to give Burrow enough time to pass the ball, and I think overall we will get more push than them.

This is probably true. It’s so hard to find accurate numbers these days. Different sites don’t update as often and many of them vary.

Fans will crave a pass heavy attack. But I hope Ensminger doesn’t try to get too flashy if the opportunity is there to run and go play action off of that. Obviously every game is different, but our OL greatly outweighs their DL. I trust Steve as a playcaller.

I think the Tigers' O line is stronger than the Miami D line as well. It will be interesting to see if LSU's inexperienced backfield can rack up yardage and control the ball without turnovers.

Practices against our first unit front 7 will have us ready for any D-line this year.

Nobody on their D line would crack out 2 deep

Delusion at its finest, joe Jackson will be a first round pick in the draft next year but he won’t crack the 2 deep?...
Oh don’t sleep on Jonathan garvin, he has elite bend of the edge, look how he beat top 10 pick mike mcglinchey for a sack fumble as a true freshman vs Notre Dame last year. He’s a monster

Don't be sensitive Brodie. Most of us know Miami is a really good team. look forward to meeting your fans in Arlington
