I would say JJ had all the support he needed.

The line sucked arse. There's been enough JJ bashing on here to last a lifetime, but to argue that he was somehow a terrible first year starter is fricking retarded. The sacks were a bit much, but his stats and wins were respectable. He definitely regressed.

The thing that bothered me about JJ was not the lack of offensive production so much as how confused the offense was EVERY snap. Also his attitude towards the rest of the offense when things went poorly. Not leader-like at all.

Ciron Black, Lyle Hitt, Will Blackwell, Barksdale, ...

Just throwing out some names, I dont remember how well they played in 09.

I never said he was terrible his first year. I was just pointing out he had receivers and running backs. The line played (edit) terrible and he did have a good year considering. Not bashing his first year. I actually don't have the energy or do I care about him enough to waste my time pointing out the obvious on him. I moved on pass him after his last snap.

Blackwell wasn't a factor really until 2011.

they were bad. T-Bob and Josh D were the whipping boys. Hitt wasn't far behind. Ciron had what was arguably his worst yr (remember the USL dude putting him on his arse), though we didn't realize his knees were shot.

couple that with a first yr starter that tended to hold on to the ball too long, and it looked really bad passing at times.

run-blocking, with no Helms, Herm or Quinn? comically bad.

JJ didn't have 2 stud receivers to throw to or a strong running game to lean on that year.

Terrance Tolliver and Brandon Lafell aren't/weren't stud receivers? They are both in the NFL.

The OL was pitiful in 2009. Still surprised that JJ threw that much in 2009.
Would've had no O whatsoever without throwing.

He had some sacks, but had no trust of the pocket and faded back into path of DEs on many of the sacks with all the middle pressure that year.
JJ had just 2 more sacks than Mett's 32 in '12, mostly because his wheels got him out of quite a few.

Admittedly, Mett's pocket presence was nothing to write home about in 12. He was night and day this year. Still slow as frick, but he was pretty good in the pocket and pretty good at getting the ball out of there. JJ was both more inaccurate and more risk averse. Led to more sacks and long downs.

This happens when you have a QB coach to make you progress from one year to another. JJ's true sophmore year was better than Mett's redshirt junior year. He also had no run game to speak of as Jeremy Hill, after the bowl game, will have more total yards and TDs than his entire 2009 runnings backs (including Russell Shepard) combined!!! Mett was horrible his starting year here in the redzone and JJ was ranked #2 in the country in the redzone. JJ had the 30th ranked defense, Mett had the 9th.

People bag on JJ a lot, but after seeing what Mett did in one year's time with an actual QB coach, there is no doubt in my mind that we win the last three national championships had Cam came in 2010.

'09 JJ 61.5% vs '12 ZM 58.8%.
Agree with risk averse, but I guess '08 Lee paved the way for that.
2009 could've been comparable to 2012 with some semblance of a run game.
I guess we can all forget the lows, reminisce the highs, and look ahead to the AJ era.

I still don't understand why LSU didn't have a QB coach those years instead of a TE coach.

In fairness for the OP, he should include rushing yards and TDs for both QBs. I am huge Mett fan and not so much JJ - but JJ probably had a decent amount of rushing yards and a few TDs. They numbers may not be as skewed

You've been here long enough to know that I am by no means JJ basher (the opposite, in fact). But Mett was far and away a better QB.

In retrospect, I don't actually know why this thread would choose to compare Mett to JJ, when it could have compared him to the best QBs in CFB and the NFL and still seen a good shake for his YPA and YPC.

JJ had no QB coach (to speak of) and the 3rd down offense was abysmal. Throw 4 yds when you need 7. His regression in 2010 speaks volumes about the lack of coaching on the offensive side of the ball during that time.

Way too early to assume AJ is the next best thing. Just remember how JJ looked in the Peach Bowl.

Agree it's early, but AJ performance on one drive >>>> any of JJ's Peachy performance.
I'm no JJ or AJ basher btw.

It appears to me AJ has poise.
Something JJ lacked.

I'm not sure if that can be taught.

Take out the sacks, and JJ wasn't bad at all for a first year starter.

His first season as starter actually had us hopeful going forward. He was capable at least. Then turned into a complete disaster.

The problem may have been between the ears but I wonder what could have happened with Cam as his OC/QB Coach. JJ had all the aspects you'd want in a college QB (big frame, strong arm and ability to make plays with his feet) but could never piece everything together. Mett was able to blossom under a legit coach, so it makes me wonder what could have been if we had Cam here several years earlier.
