Here's how it goes:
Gordon, Richard Lipsey, Boisie Bollinger, or a few of a hundred donors says the following:
"We will give you a check for the buyout, we'll take a check away if he stays."
And just like that, we get a new coach!

Yep, he has the lowest buyout and yearly salary in the league
His annual salary goes up by $100k each year. That means year seven's salary is $3.2M (if I'm not mistaken). Still, by year 7 that would be relatively low among SEC coaches.
It appears Woodward's approach to contracts is to sign deals that are long in duration that (relatively speaking) locks a guy into a salary so by the time it gets near the end of the contract the annual salary is reasonable with respect to market inflation. That's was the case with Jimbo's 10 year, $75M contract. 4-5 years after the initial contract was signed a $7.5M annual salary would have ranked around #20 among all coaches. The problem with that approach is that it doesn't account for what dumb AD's always do...get leveraged into negotiating a new contract after one marginal year of success. A&M got fricked because after the 2020 season they ripped up the 2018 contract and agreed to a new 10 year deal worth $95M.
You're seeing that happen now in SEC basketball with Lamont Paris at South Carolina. His first contract was 5 years at $2.4M per. He sucked just as bad as McMahon in year 1. Then, South Carolina had a really good season last year. So what happens? They extend the initial contract by six years and up the pay to $4.4M per year. South Carolina is now back to sucking again. Only now they are stuck with a more expensive contract for a longer time.
The money on McMahon's deal wasn't bad at all. It was the 7 year length that is the problem. Of course, I guess really it came down to the total amount. The only variance was how many years over which to spread it out. I don't think Woodward anticipated it would be this bad after only 3 seasons. He probably banked on getting at least 4 before having to consider a change.
Regardless, the product has collapsed and not making a change means a much higher lost opportunity cost. (1) It will be a lost opportunity to start over now when you know that you are going to have to do that soon anyway. (2) It also could be a lost opportunity to find the right new HC. The guy you need might be available now (not just Wade) But if you wait a year he likely won't be. That requires knowing the marketplace as a whole which I would hope EVERY AD does at all times. If not, that is AD malpractice.

There is 0 chance McMahon is back next year. At some point the on-court product is so bad that there is no choice.

Hire a coach who makes the tourney and that’ll pay for the buyout itself.

While there should be 0 chance, I wouldn't say there is.
Not that I agree with it, but the rationale would be LSU has clearly gone "all in" with a money push for the 2025 football season (for good reason, the pieces should be in place for a real CFP/championship run). By asking for a ton of money for football, it may be difficult to ask for a relatively significant sum now for basketball too (fire current HC AND hire new HC). You know you are going to have to ask for that money eventually if you don't make a coaching change now, but it may be easier to ask for it next year.
Of course, the risk in that is football doesn't live up to expectations this season and the donors/fans are 50X more pissed than they are about basketball struggling and demanding to buy Kelly out (at a cool ~$60M).
BK's contract has kind of put Woodward in a box. LSU is married to BK for a while. If he doesn't deliver soon it is going to cast a BIG shadow over the entire athletic department because it will be very difficult to make any changes elsewhere if you think at some point relatively soon you are going to have to ask donors to fund a $30M, $40M, $50M buyout.

LSU fired John Brady less than two years after a final four. Anyone who thinks McMahon is coming back is not based in reality.

We all hope and pray ?? that your dead on,and Mcloser arse is kicked down the road he shouldn't even be allowed to coach the next game let alone the rest of season! They fired Brady mid-season they can do the same to this clown, who is going around acting like he is a college basketball coach!

Normally I’m fine with giving a coach another year when he’s struggling. But it doesn’t look like we’re just struggling. It looks like the team is doing the opposite of getting better.
It’s obvious another year for McMahon will take the team further into an abyss. So there’s no better time to cut the rope and start over

Of course. He would have worked harder, I believe, if he was on probation his second year and had to prove he could put together a winning team.

Watch an empty PMAC for MBB and season tix not renewed next year and see how fast McLoser gets fired.
For most universities, MBB is the second biggest money maker behind football.

McMahon is done after this year. It's over for him.
Posted on 2/7/25 at 9:00 pm to Alt26
McMahon is pretty cheap relative to his conference peers. I could see them giving him another year if there isn’t a no brainer coach for them to go after. But it does looms like there will already be Florida St and Indiana to compete with for now.

He doesn't deserve another year, he doesn't deserve the rest of the season! Ship his arse out now be done with him,and get a coach in here who can win and rebuild a destroyed program.

They’re on another old coach at the moment. That coach from Maryland when we played them. He was the guy before McTurnover I think.

Well clearly he doesn’t, that’s why we are discussing replacements. However, I don’t believe the athletic department is in a hurry to get into a buyout and coaching search since they will likely have to pay the replacement a million more than they are paying McMahon.

This guy gets it. I say fire him now and start tampering with his replacement!!!

He will get his fourth year w the money he’s been asking for. Revenue sharing is going to be very kind to basketball. He will then be evaluated on his ability to build a lineup and coach them up. I wish him supreme good luck…
