It’s an absolute travesty that a team who was desperate for athleticism especial down low, had a Corey Chest just wasting away on the sidelines.

Yeah, screw Corey for being mature and wanting to redshirt.

Coach didn't think he was ready to play in the SEC last year, he sees him every day in practice and in scrimmages, I think we have to defer to him on this.

Yeah but he also didn’t think he was ready for significant playing time to start this year. His minutes only went up after injury. And now he’s quite literally one of if in not the most important players on the team.

I get it.....I guess. But we were soooo soft last year. If anything that dude hustles his arse off and rebounds - we absolutely could have used, and I think he could have at least given that...seems the kind of energy he brings now he would have brought last year....I mean he's still very raw now but his motor is non-stop, I'm betting it was last year too.

JFC. Who cares?

Corey Chest is now a RS Freshman in the same class as Vyctorius Miller, CG3, and Robert Miller. And if the recent ruling holds, Noah Boyde will also be a true freshman since junior college won't count against eligibility. So you have a solid class of 5 guys with 3 years of eligibility after this one.

But I guess you would have rather had a more raw Chest play 0-5 minutes a game last year.

That recent ruling only applies to athletes who would’ve exhausted their eligibility at the end of this academic year.

basketball is more than athleticism. coach thought he needed development and you are In no position to claim otherwise. you are just making shite up.

But for Fountain being a late scratch vs K-State Chest would STILL be getting little playing time (well, maybe not now with Reid out). He played 3 minutes of garbage time vs ULM and didn’t play at all vs Alabama St in a game LSU got significantly out-rebounded. McMahon didn’t keep Chest on the bench “seasoning” him for just the right moment to put him on the floor. He’s was reluctantly forced into playing one of the best rebounders in the SEC

You’re wasting your time with these people. They still haven’t figured out that McMahon isn’t very good at most things

Actually I'd rather him have played 10-15 minutes a game last year.

But he didn't so the point is moot. My take was his energy and rebounding would have played last year probably as well as it has this year and that was something we were sorely lacking last year.

So we were going to sit Jalen Reed and Fountain because you think that Chest was the same exact player last year that he is right now after a year of practice and development.

Here is the thing:
1) Chest was and is ok with the redshirt. Reportedly his father said that they requested it.
2) He is doing well this year and has 4 years of eligibility.

You and some posters who are just haters are trying to indict McMahon because he redshirted a player last year who is playing well this year. Just shows how some people are trying to find any fault in the coach even on non issues. Right now you guys are bitching about a player redshirting last year and 3 weak opponents over the holiday break.

Actually, in my retrospective hypothetical, I envision Chest's minutes in place of Baker/Dean. Chest could have fallen out of bed last year and been better than either defensively and/or rebounding. Both absolutely KILLED us in certain matchups with their inability to defend and rebound and Baker's scoring was very inconsistent so much so that many times what he brought on offense didn't come close to making up for how much he hurt on the glass and on defense.

The thought that we wouldn't do that because Chest was too small to guard the post I would challenge - when you consider how bad Baker and Dean were in that regard.

There's no doubt that this was o.k. with Chest - they absolutely would not have done it otherwise. I understand this and always have. I just wonder having now seen Chest's instinctual qualities and non-stop motor if they every maybe considered pulling it? That's all. Not going after CMM with a pitchfork here.

I think you are confusing me with some other posters and maybe reading to much into my take - I'm just throwing out a hypothetical and saying in retrospect - from what I've seen from Chest I think we maybe could have used Chest last year, the instinctual things and the energy he brings might have helped. they did not and now they have an extra year. And that's great but what's the harm in discussing it......I didn't say CMM is a frickin idiot for not doing it or anything close to that.

You are right, I am bitching about the 3 opponents - you got me there, and I think it's a legit gripe but you and I have debated this already. Nothing can be done about it at this point, but as I've said I think it worth considering doing it differently in the future and I hope CMM does.

This forum exists for discussion of LSU sports. I don't think either of my opinions here are unreasonable or hateful - there just discussion points. I like CMM and want him to succeed....I really do. Shouldn't mean I can't take some issue with him from time to time.

it is fair to say you are a better judge of chest's talent than coach McMahon, given your time at practice and general scouting skill?

Well it’s a pattern that’s happened with at least 4 other players so…

I don't put you in the haters group. I meant that as you and other posters who are haters.
But you also have to recognize that this thread was started by an OP who considered Chest redshirting last year as a "travesty".

Overall this might be solved if the NCAA adds the football redshirt rule to other sports. In basketball it would let a player play in up to 10 games without using a year of eligibility if they have a redshirt. It would give us a chance to see a bit of a freshman who is redshirting.
