My daughter is attending Kim Mulkey's camp at LSU this week. Matt McMahon has been walking through the halls both days I've gone into drop her off. He doesn't interact with any of the kids or parents, as they walk by. Maybe I'm being too hard on him, but I don't understand why someone who is trying to build support for a struggling program wouldn't at least say "Good morning" and smile at the kids and tell them to enjoy basketball camp. Hell, maybe introduce himself to a few of the parents that are walking by. Over the past couple of years, I've often thought he's not a very good marketer for the program. The past couple of days have just confirmed that for me. Have any of you all had more positive interactions with him?

Could be that it’s not his camp?

There was this other coach that many have forgotten that used to ride around campus on a golf cart and give regular students rides to class while he chit chatted with them. He had the undying support of the fans. But he is ancient history so what are we even talking about.

Maybe he’s busy with tons of stuff on his mind. He’s leading a basketball program, afterall.

I ran into him at a waiting area in a restaurant prior to start of his first season. Told him welcome to Baton Rouge and he shook my hand and was quite engaging and friendly. Very down to earth. I was quite impressed.

Sometimes, people just aren’t on in the mornings and it wasn’t his camp.

Also, he’s not even the first or second most notable basketball coach in that building. I doubt young girls even know who he is.

I mean if you're expecting the guy to dress up in costumes and act like a three ring circus promoter, that will never be him. He's more of a serious guy that can cut loose when it's called for, like after beating Kentucky at home.

There are many basketball coaches that aren't entertainers. More than one way to be a successful basketball coach.

He isn't saying that CMM should be spending hours talking to kids but to be personable when he walks past parents and kids. A little kindness goes a long way. I guarantee you that Mulkey says hello to all the kids and parents she runs across at CMM's camp.

James Franklin stopped and knocked on the door of a house in Vandy because they flew a Tenn flag outside. He asked what he could do to get that flag replaced with a Vandy flag. The guy told him that having a HC that cared enough about the community to stop buy and have a friendly chat was enough. The next day Franklin drove by and there was a Vandy flag out front. He dropped of tickets to their next game later that evening.

When you are trying to build support for a program that is suffering, you have to do the little things and engage with the community.

I bet if he introduces himself and talks to them they would know and be more inclined to watch his games. People like rooting for people that were nice to them.

I've been critical of McMahon. But I wouldn't be for this. In fact, you and I probably walked past each other THIS MORNING because I walked by McMahon as well (he didn't say anything). Of course, this isn't his camp either, so I wouldn't expect him too. (On the flip side, Bob Starkey said hello)

Point is just because he didn't say anything to you (or me) in this particular instance doesn't mean he's not promoting the team. Hell, I thought Wade was a hell of a promoter. But during his time at LSU I saw him at a soccer game with his young daughter when I was there with mine. I didn't try to engage him, but he was stand-offish and staying away from the other parents.

These guys have very public jobs. It can probably be a bit exhausting if the are expected to interact with everyone that crosses their paths.

If his team can't defend again this year, or can't have 3 possessions in a row where they don't turn the ball over I'll criticize him. That he didn't say hello to me this morning? No big deal...I probably wouldn't say hello to me either

And for $10 she'll even let your kid take a picture with her!!!!

I'm battling that BS on principle. Somewhere in the back of a closet I have an awkward photo of 8 year old me and Skip Bertman from his baseball camp. My mom and dad didn't have to pay extra for it. The camp staff just put me in a line and made be go sit next to Skip
