I've often wondered that myself. I know for a fact that Bevo is somewhat sedated. They keep him in a corner and don't lead him out on the field, but there is a cannon down there that goes off every time they score. They also bring him to Dallas for the OU game and to every bowl game (they brought him to Pasadena for the 2005 NC game).
I'm not sure why PETA targeted LSU and left some schools alone.

I think they're trying to tread lightly with keeping a live tiger on campus and are trying their best to keep it as humane as possible.
Caging a tiger and parading it around that 100 decibel stadium doesn't seem like a good idea when they don't even allow dogs/pets around his habitat due to it riling him up.
