Main Indicators of a Swift Decline

1) Coaches Leaving or being Fired - only one in this case is Chavis, and we have a good understanding of why (money, pride, contract security.....followed by claims of disliking our offense and other coaches)
2) Players leaving early for NFL draft - while this was the case in the past 2-3 seasons, it appears to be down considerably so far for 2015 - I say much always has to do with the quality and readiness of the players, but some has to do with loyalty too. So, given the circumstances, we could be seeing many more early departures from some of our better players if the players didn't "believe" in their future at LSU.
3) Quick fall-out of top commitments for 2015 - not seeing it at this point - in fact, it's appearing some players are that much more determined to come to LSU and play for Miles and with the talent we already have in place.
4) Player Discipline - seems to be collectively a much better focused group of men, with less problems off the field this past year or so than in the past.
5) Fan Loyalty - remains to be seen - we've been spoiled over the past 10 years with a pretty good run without anything close to a losing season, but expectations run high now - that's a good thing as long as we understand there are more than a handful of equally talented and financially supported teams to compete against - championships are not a "gimme" for anyone.
For me, as long as we're continuing to recruit and compete at a high level every year, and check the boxes on most of the above in a positive way on a consistent basis, then I'm of the opinion that there is not going to be any decline (swift or otherwise).

I would add getting shut out by Arkansas.

We aren't competing at a high level. Playing one close game to Alabama is not "competing at a high level." We were (for all intents and purposes) out of the SEC West hunt by the middle of October.

Ummm...is this a joke? all of these are "CHECK" for LSU at the moment.
1) Coach left
2) Most players leaving early last three years and probably have 3 or 4 leaving again
3) We're not in the top 10 right now.
4) Haha...really?
5) Fan apathy has already begun.

1. Saban lost 3-4 Assts EVERY year he was here, it was an epidemic that had local media very concerned every offseason.
2. Spears, Clayton, M. Hill left early after 2003 NC
3.I do not have numbers in front of me, but I seem to remember being disappointed in 2004 and 2005 recruiting classes. The lowest 10 minute period was when Joe McNight announced he was going to USC.
4. Our arrests have been WAY down since the early 2000's, we had DWIs, fights, recruits in jail etc.
5. Our fanbase is only consistent in the fact that nothing is good enough, period, and that has been the case for 50 years.
by this list, the decline started in 2004. I will say this has been a pretty good decade for a decline. 2 NC game appearances in the middle of a decline. Is every other program trying to replicate our current "decline"?

In all honesty, I tend to agree (but my brain says MELT!). We're a decent QB from a SEC west championship. Even if Uncle Rico is named the DC.
I also think that QB was sitting on our bench this year, which obviously points to much bigger problems.

Considering we were top 2 -3 annually in the SEC and haven't been in last few years, the decline has already been in place. The lack of direction and the fact that we are merely a mid tier sec program now shows that this decline will probably continue. What is your definition of swift? To me another year like last and that's pretty swift.

1) Coaches leave for better opportunities from time to time and/or because of an internal disagreement - I'm not convinced a likely Haley/Orgeron combo would be a big decline - many have been unhappy with "3rd and Chavis";
2)losing 3-4 players of which a couple can be replaced fairly easily is much better than 8-9 key players on average in the past 2+ years;
3)I'm of the opinion we will be - many key players yet to commit
4) Compared to prior years, I'd say "Haha...yes!"
5) Only the bandwagoneers - loyal fans get the benefit of savoring and appreciating a great season much more than those who expect perfection and total domination - you know what kind of fans I'm referring to, don't you? The kind that say "You didn't beat us, we beat ourselves".

The Tigers were in pretty much every game this season other than the Auburn and Arkansas game. I'm not panicking until they pull a Texas and have a .500 season.

quote:Declines in football are a lot like economic declines. By the time everyone recognizes it, it's too late.
Main Indicators of a Swift Decline
Step 1) Seeds of decline are sown. Very few obvious outward signs, but some errors or simply negative factor that will eventually show symptoms have occurred. A few people may see them, but very few. And, for the most part, they are made fun of by those who think they're crazy.
Step 2) First real signs that the seeds have taken root. Still, most people perceive the slight decline as a mere blip. They expect full recovery and relatively quick.
Step 3) Signs are no longer really deniable but there will be a few hold outs who swear that things are going to turn around and demand that no policies be significantly changed. "It's just a cycle and no individuals or policies are to blame".
Step 4) Any moron knows the bottom has fallen out. Everyone in step three disappears. Pretty soon, everyone you meet claims to have fallen into Step 1.
