They were better. But Cartwright was no slouch.
Plus, Newman and Reynolds both have a much higher ceiling than Cartwright.

Speaking of pitching, will the new ball next year help or hurt pitchers? Does it close the gap between elite and above average pitchers? Or does it widen it?
Thanks and I'll hang up now.

Yep, him too.
frick our pitching is going to be so stacked. That's pretty amazing considering we lost arguably the program's best pitcher ever plus Broussard.

No one really knows about the pitching side. Guesses are that it will lessen movement on off speed but with a slight increase in velocity. And who knows about the control adjustments to a different grip

It's going to hurt it. Not only will the balls travel further, but the lowered seams won't allow as much movement on breaking balls.
The good pitchers will still be dominant though.

Hard throwers will be able to throw harder.

Thanks ell. I was reading that there will be less drag on the ball so I wonder how does it translate to pitching...besides a fast ball. So does a 94 mph fastball become 98 or it's not going to be that much of a change? I just want to gorilla bats back! Making pitchers pay for mistakes

That's not what gorilla ball was.

Not that much. 2 mph maybe. You won't ever see gorilla ball back. That's a good thing IMO

A 94 mph fastball might become a 94.7 mph fastball.
Again, I'm no mathematician. That's ell's calling. Either way, the increase will be very marginal.

You're right. It just seemed that way to me. I guess my baseball ignorance is showing. I always translated(in my younger days) that a hr was usually a mistake pitch.

Who is gonna wear #18?

Is it wrong for me to believe that Marshall, Godfrey, Lange and Latz will all have major pitching roles by the end of the season?

Eh, one of them is bound to struggle
But its possible

Who knows but I think we're getting a little ahead of ourselves.
