PETA? You mean the People who Eat Tasty Animals?

No, it's People Eating Threatened Animals.

Ivory billed woodpecker tastes just like chicken, but spotted owl tastes like bald eagle...

There are plenty of good causes out there one is coming up in November, you can fight for that whichever side of the isle you are on.

The "isle" is clearly Manhattan, and the side of the isle they're on is undoubtedly the Upper West Side.

You could be quite famous if you would disclose the location of these birds. A confirmed siting hasn't been reported since the 90's!

There were confirmed sightings in Arkansas by two reputable ornithologists in 2005:

Insert foot into mouth.

I even took an ornithology class two years ago.

Granted the siting did not seem to provided 100% conclusive evidence because the video was not very clear LINK

Seems to me all they really do is find things to bitch about, but don't actually do anything.

lots of "causes" like that to a certain degree. they really don't want to accomplish anything; that might do away with their job. the american cancer society is toast if we cure cancer. ever heard of polio?

And what's worse is the people saying that Mike is lonely because he is by himself and has no one to mate/play with

Agreed. But from what I've read, reputable ornithologists had erred on the side of skepticism, perhaps to a fault, prior to these sightings, so for them to call it "confirmed" is pretty strong. Cool stuff.

PETA has a policy of taking on high profile "causes" like Mike bc they believe it gives them more publicity. Which it does, albeit bad publicity. But like them or not, everyone knows PETA.

That said, PETA does good things in regards to the treatment of animals in slaughterhouses. But things like Mike just piss people off and PETA never actually succeeds in accomplishing anything.

PETA can't even free that poor tiger at the truck stop in Lobdell owned by that white trash goon.

I don't have a link but I also remember reading a story about an audio recording of Ivory Bills in the Pearl River Swamp. They were being conservative with that report too since there was no visual sighting.

The conditions that those tigers live in is horrible. Maybe if PETA would focus on getting those tigers moved to a habitat built like the one that Mike has they would get the support but they want to fight to free them. These tigers would not make it in the wild either and it would be cruel to move them any where where they would have to hunt for food.

Our economy sucks, unemployment is at a all time high. You could be fighting to change this. Leave LSU and Mike alone.
By this method, so could you, instead of reading LSU message boards bitching about PETA.

If you've watched the movie "The Big Year" they talk about how often people birding count hearing a call as part of a bird sighting.
In fact my ornithology professor confirmed that many bird surveys rely heavily on this technique.
I am just a bit skeptical about this for a finding a possibly extinct bird.

Also, a lot of the sightings were by amateurs, and these birds are easily mistaken with the pileated woodpecker.
I guess I just want full HD pictures or a fresh bird carcass before I can say it was truly found.

Agreed, but that's why the initial amateur sighting in 2004 was discounted, until skeptical experts repeatedly saw what they believed to be Ivory Bills.

I also agree that we can't be absolutely certain until we have real "proof" as you describe, but these experts wouldn't have "confirmed" the sightings casually - in fact, their default position on sightings had always been "it must not be an Ivory Bill." Intriguing stuff.

Woodpecker discussion aside, PETA gets so caught up in being right and freeing animals that they fail to realize that the only chance that most people will ever have to witness the beauty and majesty of a full grown tiger is in such habitats. Without interaction, a tiger is just some animal that people see on television and forget about when they change the channel. Even if only one person takes up the defense of tigers and their habitat in the wild after seeing Mike, that is more than PETA has ever down with crappy commercials and finger pointing.

Now, back to the woodpecker discussion.

So Mike's the 1% I keep hearing about. If we're not careful, instead of PETA protesting we'll end up with an Occupy Mike's Habitat movement.

You need to watch the Penn and Teller Showtime show bullshite. They did one on PETA, and it made PETA look like hypocrites.
