Florida win drops LSU
How does Florida winning hurt us? -
is it because they played a weak school and it reduces our schedule strength?- Makes no sense to me- Boise does not play anyone to begin with

The LSU bowl game is NOT being on tv by ESPN. They have enough pull to have teams dropped in the BCS for ratings.

I dont know all the logistics of the situatiom but basically, each computer spot from the 4 of the 6 BCS computers used in LSU's computer ranking is worth .0133.
In the BCS standings. We had a .063 lead on Boise State. Somehow, this game ended up dropping us a spot(I'm guessing that Western Illinois team beat Mcneese earlier in the year or something), and dropped us from being ranked 10th in Colley computer to 11th. So now, because of that, Boise overall BCS ranking rises ~.0050 and ours drops ~.0050.
Its bullshite really and there should be NO reason why a FCS team should have this much effect on an SEC teams ranking.

I wondered about this too, especially with WV winning also.

The only game that matters now is the National Championship. The other bowls, including the so called BCS, are gravy. It is a reward for your players. Oh and lets the host city fill their hotel rooms during the slow season.

Besides, a loss to Nevada should count for at least 3 SEC losses.
Effectivly it did.

This is a pretty big surprise on several different levels:
1) I can't believe Colley left out a game
2) It is a surprise that the two were so close that one small game flipped them in Colley.
3) It is an even bigger surprise that LSU was hurt by that...if anything it seems like it could help
4) The biggest surprise is that LSU and Boise were close enough in the overall BCS that a small change in ~1/18 of the BCS formula shook things up.
In general, a win over any team HELPS your ranking...even if it is a high school team. Beating Appalachian State is better than beating OPEN DATE. The Colley Matrix is the best computer ranking in my opinion and is mathematically sound. However, I have seen teams lose a very small fraction of a point for beating a "rent a win" (which I believe is a flaw). I have never seen it actually affect a teams ranking and worse I never thought it would have the domino effect of hurting opponents of that team.
But in the end what it really means is that Boise and LSU are so even that it is too close to distinguish.

Btw, here is Wes Colley's official statement:
Colley Statement
I am not sure what database he uses. I use peter Wolfe's and I think several computer polls use that one. I didn't run the Colley Matrix myself last week - although I would have assumed I made an error (and not Colley) if I had. I am surprised no one else called him out on it though since his algorithm is published.

If somebody says Boise St. is 0.0004 better than LSU, a Tiger fan will call him on it.

Ok I dont get it.. Colley Matrix states that they DO NOT USE FCS data in his poll.
ABSTRACT
So why does App State even matter?
ABSTRACT

Colley's matrix method for ranking college football teams is explained in detail, with many examples and explicit derivations. The method is based on very simple statistical principles, and uses only Div. I-A wins and losses as input—margin of victory does not matter. The scheme adjusts effectively for strength of schedule, in a way that is free of bias toward conference, tradition, or region. Comparison of rankings produced by this method to those produced by the press polls shows that despite its simplicity, the scheme produces common sense results.
So why does App State even matter?

Up until about 2005, Colley didn't use 1AA games at all, he pretended like they didn't exist and the PDF document online describes that system.
He decided to include them in 2005 because otherwise Va Tech would be ranked like #4 this year. He has a unique, somewhat complicated way fo doing that which he describes. It makes sense, but somewhat hard to duplicate exactly.

Thanks Matt for taking the time to respond

It dropped us one spot. All the more motivation for going out and skullfricking the aggies. We do that and we will be back in the top ten at the end.
You would have never gotten me to believe that we would have a shot at top ten at the beginning of the season.
By the same token, if Boise St wants to come down here and settle it, I say bring their asses and get ready to have them whooped!
