He's thinking someone else can win and if we're going to build you new facilities (which we are with the 100 million bond for the football expansion), we want someone that is going to win. Great guy, but time for a change.

so why not wait until we actually have the facility? i just don't understand this timing, making the NCAA tourney is not enough for a team with awful facilities?

Because if you lose three straight seasons, and you have this in place to happen, might as well make the move now and sell the next hire on the fact that these facilities will come. If a change was inevitable, why wait?

To save money in the short term when everyone thinks we can't compete till the facilities improve anyway? Wouldn't it be easier to sell the next hire on the fact that the facilities are already there?

I do not believe we should lose 80% of the time to the big 3 in sec over 35 years, it is franky embarrasing to me...now if others are ok with this (and not all are), fine, but this is the tiger "rant".
How much more do you think we should spend to lose to them just 50% of the time instead?

I'm not saying we have to go out and hire a guy for an absurd amount. But certainly there are other guys out there that win that don't even make us much as Tony.

Are there other guys out there that would take less than what Minnis made to coach at LSU and can win in the SEC?

How much did Minnis make anyway? For all I know the coaching search itself could eat up half his salary.

I really don't know squat about college tennis, except a friend of mine used to date a girl on the team, and another friend played at Ole Miss.

I really have no clue. But LSU has more money than most schools, other schools certainly have won in the last three years, and I would think that the prospects of brand new facilities and a pay upgrade could sway someone.

I don't know squat about the financials either. I think he's one of the nicest guys I've ever come across in the college coaching scene, but we've lost three years in a row. Even if it is tennis, we have to do better if we're going to pay you any amount.

Mark Guilbeau is from Lafayette. He was very successful at Kentucky and is coaching at Virginia. Would be a great hire.

Wow! I live in Florida now, but Tony was my brothers doubles partner in high school and college. Truly a super guy! Sorry to hear that he is gone.

I'm fairly certain he was wasn't making that much...it was certainly at the bottom end of the SEC

+1
My girlfriend played tennis at LSU under Tony and I have nothing but nice things to say about the guy. I also wish him the best.

This is a mistake. I knew some Tennis players when I was at LSU and he recruited well and he ran a good program. I've always thought that non-revenue sports should be more about running a good program with good students and less of an obsession with winning.

I don't want LSU programs to be crap, but let's be honest and admit non-revenue sports don't need to be held to the same standard of revenue sports.

Good riddance...Geoff McDonald hired this guy and he survived 21 years of utter mediocrity.

His record in the SEC is ABYSMAL!

I always thought that he was retained, for reasons other than competitiveness.

Great Flush by Mr. A-Sleepa AD...he better start doing his job, because like Martin and Lombardi, he'll be shown the door real soon....

I knew mark way back when both he and tony were teaching in lafayette. Was somewhat surprised when i first learned he had left Lafayette and entered into the college coaching ranks , but it looks like he has has a great career so far. Other than baton rouge being close to home, why would mark leave a good deal at uva considering that he is actually at a school that cares about tennis?
