well the team (coaches and players) did quit, so why embarrass themselves and LSU even more.

I understand why they refused but it still makes the university look bad.

The Simmons signing with agent is the straw that broke the back, once he was out, there was no sense in LSU playing that NIT game.

NIT selection committee quoted as saying LSU were definitely on the board for consideration to the NIT.
I think they wanted Ben Simmons to play for ratings reasons.
Simmons publicly stated after Saturday's game that he wanted to play more games in purple and gold (presumably he meant LSU not the Lakers
).
It would NOT be a good PR move for Ben to refuse to play. Any potential NBA agent will be telling him this.
If JJ/Alleva really did cave in to pressure from the Simmons "camp", they both need to be fired.
You cannot be publicly seen to pander to a prima donna. Such a display of weakness does nothing to help LSU's basketball image.
Refusing to play will also have a negative impact on Ben Simmons'image .
I see that as lose-lose.
BTW, I'm pretty sure the NCAA doesn't allow a student athlete to sign with an agent while they are still playing for (and therefore still enrolled) at a school. Ben will have to officially withdraw from LSU before he signs.
If he signed with an agent prior to Saturday, the agent and the LSU would be fined.

That's good but we need to refuse JJ as our coach!!

We whined, took our ball and went home. That's more humiliating than our losses in my book.

This is not accurate. Simmons does not have to withdraw from LSU to sign with an agent. It means he can no longer have any association with the basketball team as a player. He is free to stay at LSU and continue his education or even play any sport other than basketball if he wishes.
Also, the NCAA has no power to fine agents.

I know we are all tired of this basketball team, but damn.
JJ is a quitter. What coach turns down the chance to play in the postseason and give up the practice opportunities that come with it.
Really bad look for JJ and LSU.

You got 105 down votes. Wow. I didn't know that many people cared about basketball.

I will be happy if all future one-and-dones pass on us. Allowing this practice has practically ruined college basketball. If the ncaa had shite for brains they would make it standardized across the board rule that a scholarship offer is a 3 or 4 year commitment with no other professional contract superseding until the end of term. It would be good for both the college sport and for the NBA. If a kid lets a high school prospect analyst convince him that he will be ready for pro ball in a year after graduating, let the nba pay to train him for that year instead of disrupting what used to be an interesting sport.

The NIT is a waste of time anyway.
Yeah that is what we need. Hold up a trophy screaming, "WOOHOO We're number 69!!! Yeah Baby!!!!"

This season was over when Trent and TCU whipped LSU in that closed scrimmage!

That's the best news from the basketball team I have heard all season.

Make a signed scholarship a binding contract.
