I'd like to see Lansville get starts during the week, too.
If we're going to be using a ton of guys on the weekend (from coach comments, it sounds like we are), then we shouldn't need to use the mid-weeks for getting guys work. It would help more long term to get Lansville ready as a starter.

I'm wondering if our "closer" is going to be a 9th inning guy, or a "highest leverage" guy.
From listening to Jay, closer will likely be the guy who comes in in the highest leverage inning late in gMes, whether its the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th

Throw in Shaffer, Vietmeier, Money and Gervase. There is a lot of talent to work with. I think the coaching decisions are going to be very important.
Coach Kelly mentioned that he thinks he has 12 guys he count on. Hopefully that number grows and gives him plenty of options.

Shaffer and Money are multi inning. Vietmeier would be single inning. So many guys to keep track of.

That will be a refreshing change.

The only decision will be the sequencing. It sounds like they will have pre-determined pitch counts, batters faced, or times through the order that they will stick with even if a guy is cruising (maybe push it a hair if he's really cruising). If a guy struggles, they'll get him out quick and move the sequence up. At least that's what it sounds like to me.

Forgot about him. He's another single inning type guy. I'm wondering if our "closer" is going to be a 9th inning guy, or a "highest leverage" guy.
I could be wrong but LSU isn't going to be in many 4-2 or 3-2 type games this year.
We can all agree this pitching staff won't have many long stints from starters, if they can get 2-3 innings in relief consistently from guys such as Coleman, Money, Reyzelman, or Hellmers they may be on to something.

I like Floyd as our Friday guy.
I think this is pretty optimistic. Floyd didn't show much last year. Literally all he ever threw was a fastball. Theres no way a one-pitch guy is going to be your Friday night starter. Now I know he had a ton of potential, and if he learned to use his legs he could probably add some good velocity to his FB. and maybe he developed a 2nd/3rd pitch in the fall?

D1Baseball said we will be in trouble if Fontenot is starting for us once SEC starts.
Seems like a weird comment for them to make. Fontenot has good stuff.

Coleman might be the best strike thrower on the team and he is one of my favorites but he needs to work on consistency
Seems contradictory. Coleman had one great outing in the post season last year and the rest were pretty meh. The talent is obviously there so hopefully he takes the next step.

Johnson said he will pitch whoever he needs to get the win on Friday night. He will worry about the rest of the weekend when he gets there.
We will probably win a lot of games with that approach. Let our bats win saturday and sunday and use whatever pitching we can to win friday.

they mention cobbling innings together in an unorthodox way. Multiple pitchers being used. Johnson said if it takes us 5-7 pitchers to get 9 innings, thats what he’ll do.
I think we win a lot of games with this, but it does concern me in postseason play when we're playing lots of games in a short time. Also relying on that many pitchers to be on in a single day in college is tough. Guys have bad days and one bad inning can hurt you in this situation.

f Fontenot starts on Friday, throws 30 pitches, then we get a big lead and he's pulled...then we need a back end guy on a Sunday, here comes Fontenot again, then is role changes for the following weekend.
Fontenot struggled big time last year when he was asked to pitch a 2nd time in one weekend. I highly doubt we see him in this kinda role because of that.

Really like Grant Taylor. Big guy with a power arm. Sat 94-96 against UL in the Fall. If he can throw strikes we will see a lot of him.
Posted on 1/18/22 at 9:39 am to DRock88
I don’t agree with you pulling Font with a lead and then having him possibly coming back on Sunday. His arm can get destroyed, do you know what it takes to get ready? It might be 30 pitches on the mound, But what about the 20 or so pitches in the bullpen, plus between innings. pitch count with intent of 80-90% now is around 75+ , You crazy ! Once or twice over the season max I can see that.

Alot of that was on consecutive days. Pitching friday and then sunday maybe different. Also, dont undersell that he and the rest of the staff maybe training different of when they throw and how often they throw this offseason in prep

It was an example of using a guy on multiple days in multiple roles in a weekend, if the situation arose. And, yes, I know what it takes. The main point is that I think you can pretty much scratch the normal when it comes to pitching decisions.

Also adjusting the way they warm up for "starts". If you can throw 2 relief appearances in a weekend, why not adjust to be able to throw a short start/opener role and be available again if needed for another short relief role.

If Edwards can continue to find consistency like he did during the regional last year, he could be a great middle relief guy and eat up a lot of weekend innings or possibly a Sunday/mid-week starter.
Posted on 1/18/22 at 10:27 am to BruceUnhinged
Absolutely. I like Edwards. He fatigued down the stretch last year, so they'll either need to condition him better or give him more rest between work.
Posted on 1/18/22 at 10:32 am to BruceUnhinged
If you read Edwards profile as a freshman he was considered a developmental guy. Great athlete and never focused on baseball full-time in high school. Yet I could argue he was our most productive freshman pitcher. If he develops more he could be a big contributor.

Every interview Johnson has said he’s not afraid to bring closer in 7th if he needs to and figure out 9th later
Posted on 1/18/22 at 10:47 am to DRock88
Edwards was kind of ruined in that ole miss series, threw all 3 days, wasnt fair to him, and probably cost us game 3

Coleman had two other strong, extended outings near the end of last season - one vs Bama and one vs A&M.
