No. Romero could play 2B or 3B if Pineda is the outright SS. Pineda only has a year or 2 left anyway.

Pineda has 1 year.

Played 2 years at Southern Nevada before going to Baylor for 2 years.

Got it. So, Pineda could play for a year then handoff to Romero/Guidry or one of the 2023 guys or a transfer or JT as a senior. I don't think getting Pineda is any other tell than Jay is not messing around.

Yeah, I don't think Jay liked the lack of infield depth and doesn't want to be caught in that situation again. Especially if we don't get either Romero or Guidry to campus.

I think we need at least one more transfer portal infielder though. And if that means Guidry and Romero don't start right away, so be it. They'll play, and they'll probably move around and be a lot more versatile by the time they start full time.

Pineda was on Moscona earlier. Said Jay was the 1st coach to call him when he hit the portal. Said he didn’t even know he was officially in the portal yet until Jay called. Said he flew into Baton Rouge and Jay had a highlight package prepared for him and a vision to add a little more pop to his bat. He’s gonna spend the summer trying to add a little weight, but the ball doesn’t travel in Waco, so his approach was to not really elevate the ball and put it in play. He picked LSU because it’s the Mecca of college baseball, but also wanting to work with Jay, who is an amazing offensive mind. He said he’ll take reps at all 3 IF positions, but is most comfortable at short, but is willing to play anywhere that helps the team. Also expects to lead off. But should add some more pop and probably hit 10+ home runs.

He didn’t completely out rule the draft, though. He’s not sure where he’s projected. Sounds like he’s almost 100% coming to Baton Rouge, but there is that slight chance somebody drafts him higher than he expects and may hit a number he has in mind, but doubtful.

I mean I think he likes Thompson, but he tried to move him off of SS during the season. And the 1st position player transfer he takes is a 5th year, all conference caliber SS. Sometimes you just need to read between the lines

I agree with this. In two years Thompson has never shown the consistency to be a SS. His range is not exceptional, either. Thompson just isn’t SS material. The talent is there, but not the consistency.

It’s tempting to put him at third to utilize his magnificent arm strength, but his accuracy would scare me at third. Ultimately I think he ends up at second where he can do the least damage on throws.

Thompson could play the OF too I bet. Similar to the way Jared foster did.

All that said, if they take another inf transfer, I wouldn’t be surprised if he transferred & questions what exactly is LSU’s plan for him.
