When did any of those teams tell a qualified incoming recruit days before practice started that he doesn't have a scholarship ? You may be right but I can't recall a situation any time recently where a team did that.
Ole Miss and Alabama as recently as last year. I don't follow every team in America so I can't tell you specific examples of every time it has happened. Not defending Miles for doing it, but it isn't like he's the first guy ever

It was a piece of shite move by Miles. I don't think you'll find many other situations where a kid signs and is academically eligible and is given the boot after he's moved into his dorm a couple of days before practice starts.
it's actually quite common once the entire class is on campus... greyshirts are decided then not before!
Say what you want, but it's a business and the players know and understand that concept.

Can you point me to an example of when it happens to a qualified incoming freshman anywhere outside of the SEC.

I follow Iowa recruiting only and know for a fact that they don't oversign players and that if they do greyshirt a player they let them know during the recruiting process. Our starting LG Julian Vandevelde was a greyshirt but he knew when he signed that he was going to be a greyshirt going in.
Don't know about other big 10 teams, but it seems like every year SEC teams have more than or close to 25 players a year.

And you KNOW LSU didn't advise Porter he may need to greyshirt? You KNOW this? There was no way of KNOWING he would greyshirt, but I'm willing to bet he knew it was a possibility.

NCAA will step in and add another rule, just like with Nutt and signing 35 that year, you can take it to the bank!
Saban said Alabama is holding the 105th and final roster spot for one of two signees, wide receiver/defensive back Blake Sims or defensive back Deion Belue. Both are still awaiting clearance academically.
Defensive line signee Wilson Love didn't pass the physical because of an ankle injury but will enroll in January and count toward next year's class. So will wide receiver Ronald Carswell, who is eligible.

Saban did it and didn't even offer the kid a grayshirt. Why don't you go to the bama boards and cry to them?

How is that working out for ya?

Never heard of a team over signing before. Always wondered why teams can sign over 25 players a year even though you can only have 85 players on scholarship. Seems like an extremely shady thing to do.
LSU did not come up with the term grey shirt. The NCAA did. This is the first time he's ever had to use it. I said has because usually all of the signees do not qualify. This year they did. It may never happen again. They need to change the rules to allow the students to enroll in school, because in this case it appears they cannot even be enrolled until the second semester of the school year. What is the guy supposed to do, between now and then?
It simply means you take less than 12 credits and work out with the team. Your 5-year clock does not start until you take 12 credits.

also, im sure that Les went over the possibility of grey shirting with a few of the recruits. Porter may have been officially offered the grey shirt after he was already settled in, but im sure he knew it was an option that was on the table for him in the event of everyone becoming eligible.

It is unfortunate how things went with LSU in this situation, but I will not pass complete judgement not knowing all the details and knowing this pretty much always works for us. It happens all the time at schools everywhere, more so in the South, yes, but thats also where the most competitive programs are each year. If you really need all the details and examples of where and when, do a search, you found this site...

I've never heard of this.

Chris Garrett
ETA I know CG wasnt an incoming recruit, but its even worse if you were a part of the team when it happens.

For the life of me, I can't understand the self-righteous indignation about this situation from so many.
These are his options (and he gets to make this choice for himself): (1) delay becoming a full-time student for ONE SEMESTER, start school full-time in the spring and attend spring practice next year (knowing that he wasn't going to play this year anyway, and still has the opportunity to red shirt next year), or (2) go to any other school he wants (who wants him) and play right away.
What is the problem here?

I think everyone agrees it sucks, but it's the first time it has happened under Miles. (Saban did it to Trindon Holliday.)

Didn't know that about Trindon. Learn something everyday.
