Q. Kirby, what's the biggest thing about LSU's offense that just kind of took the SEC by storm this year? Is it the quarterback, the play calling, the running back, combination of all of it? What can you put your finger on?

KIRBY SMART: That's a great question. First of all, I've been in this league for a long time, and I don't know that I've seen the combination of things they've got. They've got an elite quarterback that's a really good athlete. They have a back that is a matchup guy. He can match up on anybody and go in. They've got really good wideouts, and they've got an experienced offensive line. So they go tempo, but they don't go tempo to just run the ball, they go tempo and take shots. They never change personnel. It's like 28 consecutive snaps with the same people on the field. So it does not allow you to substitute in the pattern that you want to.

So there's a combination of a lot of things, and it is scheme oriented, but it's a lot more than scheme. They have plays that they've run all year, that we've run all year. Our plays haven't looked like their plays because a lot of times we might not have the same guys doing those plays.

They've got a great group of wideouts combined with an extremely athletic quarterback, and it hit at the right time. I've got a lot of respect for what they're doing and who they're doing it with. They're hard to defend.

I guess he means within an offensive series. Otherwise, that's simply not true.

True. LSU doesn't do 28-play drives.

In was a general statement.

We stay in 11 personnel most of the game. He’s right.

Correct. I don't recall much of that this year, and it forced the D to stay with the same personnel for much of a series.

We very often go

Chase, Jefferson, Marshall Moss and CEH.

We almost never sub CEH or Miss in series.

The fact that both can lineup out wide means we can run 11, 10, Single back and 5 wide sets without letting the defense adjust.

CEH our of the backfield is a HUGE game changer.

Of course that what he means. That said, the BIGGEST reason LSU can do so is Clyde. They don't have to sub him out depending on what they want to do. Run the ball between the tackles? Clyde. Leave a back in to pass protect? Clyde. Run the back out of the backfield for a pass? Clyde. Line him up wide like a WR? Clyde.

He's LSU's Alvin Kamara. Whatever personnel the defense has on the field is a matchup problem for them.

I loved his comment from one of the press conferences last week before the game.

Kirby Smart asked the main challenges of stopping the #LSU offense:

"Where do you want me to start? We only have 30 minutes."

It was sarcasm to emphasize the point that LSU will get into their personnel grouping, stay in it, and run tempo with a variety of runs and passes including deep shots. LSU does not run tempo to just attack one area of weakness based on the defensive personnel. They attack the whole field from tempo due to their uniquely gifted group of starters that allows them to not NEED to sub and give the defense a chance to change personnel.

Burrow's ability is obviously the key component to running this style of offense, but LSU's athletes who have fit just right have created a monster of an offense that is almost non-defensible. It requires an elite defensive line, specifically defensive tackles, that can get a lot of push up the middle to control the inside running and push the pocket making the offense more of an outside running/roll-out passing offense which limits how much of the field you can attack.

If LSU plays above average or good defense, they win and win BIG!!! NOBODY can stop this offense without AA, dominant defensive tackles wrecking the middle.
