I don't know why Venables would come as Clemson is willing to pay coordinators and he likely is a HC candidate next year, but he'd be #1 for me.

Aranda could be in play, part of the reason by Bert went to Arky was because Wiscy won't pay assistants.

Pelini/Pendergast would both likely be solid choices as well, but I'd exhaust my efforts on the first two before going to them.

Aranda made 520k in 2015 with incentives and everything.

Pendergast looks like he would be the perfect fit...

That's a fricking hack article and Jimmy Smith is a fraud. It was around 8am when word got out that Steele was leaving and your telling he knew by 11:17am who LSU was targeting? Lazy assed reporting he just poached names from last years list.

But why not move Bradley Dale Peveto from STC to DC? He has experience at defensive coordinator at LSU and would be cheaper than any of those "cadillac" hires.

All good prospects.

Pelini is the best choice. Attacking defense. Knows the program and area. Can recruit.

Venables is second. All the above but minus the area.

Aranda is third. Is partial to a 3-4, but not the 3-4 most people think it is. More a one-gap attack style be the front seven versus the traditional two-gap, read and react.

Pendergast is tied for third.. Knows football. His 4-3 under/5-2 scheme "double eagle" shows his knowledge. Knock is recruiting and lack of familiarity with area. Possible a worse recruiter (at least in the first 1 to 2 years) than Chavis.

This.

It's much more of a hybrid 3-4 that relies on speed, slants, stunts, and pressure up front. And he uses anyone of the 4 LBers as the 4th pass rusher. Sometimes it's the OLB, sometimes it's the ILB. Sometimes it's the wide side LBer, sometimes it's the short side. Very difficult for the OL to pick up on the 4th pass rusher because they don't know where it's coming from. It creates addict confusion and mismatches. I think it would thrive here for us.

I'm all for Aranda. He's an extremely smart coach and knows how to prepare for an opponent and call a game. Hes also very good at connecting with his players and explaining things to them so that they will understand what he wants. And he knows how to tweak his scheme and adapt to his players. He's 1 of the top young DCs in the country and has a big future ahead of him.

We need Bo

Bo's defense was horrid in later parts of 2007. KY and AR games should never have been close.

If there is a choice, Bo better be the alternative.

My order:

Aranda
Pendergast
Pelini

(Venables isn't realistic imo)

Aranda
Pendergast
Pelini

those are the likely candidates, especially when Les knows all three and has worked with Bo, obviously. He interviewed Aranda in january.

It depends on how you look at it. In my opinion, he did a really good job of scheming around that defense's overall lack of speed in the secondary. We were athletic up front, but thin at CB. If you remember Steltz was NOT fast, and we played other Safties at both Nickle and Dime most of the time. That worked against most of the schedule, but the teams like UK and Arkansas that could spread us out and use speed against us gave that defense fits. After Dorsey went down, it was even worse because we had less of a pass rush.

Also, the team that played Arkansas and UT in the SECCG was a shell of the one that played VA Tech early in the year. They were beat to hell on both sides of the ball, but especially the D.

That's a solid list. I would add Chizik as a 4th option. We should be able to get one of the 4 with the right number of guaranteed years.

I'm getting a bad feeling about this.

Remember last year when Steele's name was mentioned and we all at the idea of him being DC.

With Les, you never know ... he could be announcing BDP as DC.

Aranda would amazing, Pendergast would be great, and I'd be satisfied with Bo Pelini coming back. while Aranda only made $520K this year, Wisconsin is supposedly planning on giving him a salary bump. I'm guessing if he stayed with the Badgers, he's be somewhere around $750K. LSU could and should EASILY beat that price. Unless Aranda insists on sticking with a 3-4, he's the best possible option.

EDIT: There's no point in even mentioning Venables. Clemson -> LSU right now wouldn't even be a lateral move. it would be a step down. unless you're willing to give him the "head coach in waiting" tag and contract that FSU gave Jimbo, it would never happen.

No chance Venables gets that tag.

Serious question: why would Pelini leave a HC job at the school in his hometown to take a DC job at a place he has already been?
