LSU deferring vs Arkansas last week.

In my opinion was huge and helped lead to victory with back to back TD'S. One to end the first and another immediately beginning the second half.
The momementum gained in that 5 min span was a big key.
I've read all the talk of analytics, yet Arkansas scored first anyway and we won. I'm personally hopeful that if we win the coin toss we defer again this week. It's at their place and defence is suspect, but no more than previously.
any other thoughts?
SIAP.

Always defer. The momentum swing with end of 1st half/beginning of 2nd half scores is real.

I agree. It was very frustrating when CBK arrived and began electing to receive. ( in coach I trust- but...) there are very few instances I personally would be for receiving the ball first. Maybe against an opponent who was highly ranked on their turf in a hostile environment, knowing that I had a strong offense and the good chance to score first and hopefully disarm their hostile environment ( maybe ) and even then it's still defer 95%+ of the time.

Don't we deter most of the time? Is this all about the FSU game?

this issue is way overblown. With the first and second half, it all evens out.
I’d rather put my best unit on the field first and try to seize momentum immediately, rather than waiting til the third quarter. If that’s our offense (which it is this year), take the ball.

Last year it seemed we elected to receive more times than deferring.

Several teams not only scored 1st but scored multiple X’s B4 LSU in ‘22, yet LSU went on to win all of said games.
IIRC OM, AU & UF (not 100% on UF) got up multiple scores yet all 3 ultimately succumbed to da TIGERS!!!!

Last year we were extremely good at playing from behind, making adjustments and just wearing people out on second half it looked like.

It was more than huge-- it was colossal! LSU achieved a twofer around the halftime break, transforming a 13-3 deficit into a 17-13 lead. The team's attitude improved greatly as a result

Posted this a month back and people were defending getting the ball first

Yep. Good time to revisit.

Im also of the opinion you always defer. Especially for a team that tends to start slow. If your offense is going to struggle for the first 1/3 of the game, get the ball in the second half once the engine is warmed up.
Against Arkansas those first two TD drives bookending the half took a total of about 1:30. After that we basically scored at will. Thats not guaranteed to happen but I do love bookending a half with TDs.
A guy like kiffen who seems to come out scorching hot on offense and cool off as the game goes on may want to take the opening kickoff and hope to ride that momentum as long as he can.

well don't we need to know how many times we won the toss to know how often we defer?

He didn't defer on every coin toss win last year such as last year's Arkansas game. It just seems that once we did win the coin toss, CBK elected to receive more often than defer. If not, most certainly more often than we were used to seeing in the past.
My original point is and has been that I believe we fair better deferring and receiving the ball in the second half.
Last week's game was a huge demonstration for that concept with back to back scores and the momentum change.
I personally hope that if given the opportunity that the Tigers defer again this weekend.

I looked it up. Here are games in Kelly’s tenure where we won the toss:
2023 Arkansas - defer
2022 UGA - defer
2022 UAB - defer
2022 Alabama - defer
2022 Florida - defer
2022 Tennessee - receive
2022 Auburn - defer
2022 Mississippi State - receive
2022 Florida State - receive
The only game I couldn’t find was 2022 Texas A&M. LSU got the ball first but I can’t find who won the toss.
As someone else suggested, I think this is mostly a perception stemming from the FSU game last year.

I prefer to defer but I really doubt there is any analytics that support kicking or receiving matters much.

Not specifically, but earlier when this topic was brought up either CBK addressed it or someone else citing that the first to score had a significant advantage in winning and in suppose the inference was that if you receive first your odds of scoring first improve, but all that is way above my knowledge bank

90% of people that watch or play football think you should defer. Unfortunately, BK is one of the 10%

Yeh IDK either. If defense is your strength I think it's a no brainer to defer.
