LSU basketball:Season hanging in the balance?

Heading into Tuesday night’s game versus Utah, I really didn’t feel good about LSU’s chances. Here are a few things that had me concerned before tip off: 1) LSU had yet to play a true road game 2) The disappearance of Chris Johnson 3) Lack of bench production 4) LSU’s inability to defend the interior against a credible big man. LSU started out the game nicely, and really didn’t show any signs of being nervous. However, it did seem they became a bit rattled in the second half and subsequently raised the white flag. Chris Johnson and Tasmin Mitchell had no chance at stopping Utah in the paint, but at least CJ finally showed some signs of life on the offensive end. The bench played a total of 62 minutes, scored a total of 10 points, and was 2-12 from the field. I expected the freshmen to struggle, but the lack of contribution from the upperclassmen has been dissapointing. Luke Nevill tore LSU apart, and could have dropped 30 on LSU had he decided to do so. Utah racked up 50 points in the paint, and it was obvious LSU had no answer from the outset. Although I didn’t expect LSU to win this game, I was disappointed they couldn’t at least make it a competitive game. I’m ready to put this debacle behind us, and take a quick glance at the rest of the season.
Coming into this season, I really felt that LSU could win 20-21 games due to a very weak non-conference schedule and another down year in the SEC. At 12-2, these are still realistic expectations. The upcoming three game stretch will go a long way in setting the tone for the rest of the season. First up, LSU must travel to Alabama on Sunday to open up SEC play. The Crimson Tide were tabbed as the pre-season favorites to win the SEC West, and they have three very talented players in Gee, Hillman, and Steele. This is a winnable game for LSU, but I’m not overly optimistic about LSU’s chances after last night. Next up, an 11-2 South Carolina team will be coming to Baton Rouge. South Carolina is still a bit of a mystery, but they can score in bunches as they are currently averaging 82 points per contest. The Gamecocks knocked off #20 Baylor in Waco, and they are led by a very talented scorer in Devan Downey (20.5ppg). Assuming that LSU loses to Alabama, LSU will need to win this game in the worst way possible. LSU will conclude this three game stretch with a visit to Oxford to take on the Ole Miss Rebels. Ole Miss (9-5) has incurred a few nasty losses this season, but LSU hasn’t won in the Tad Pad since the 2005-2006 season. I’m not really sure if LSU is capable of going 3-0 during this stretch, and I’d be very satisfied with a 2-1 mark (1-2 wouldn’t shock me either).
As far as the rest of the season is concerned, I’m not sure what to expect. I have really stayed away from making any serious predictions due to LSU’s weak schedule so far. The SEC has looked better in the last couple of weeks, and the SEC West might be a little stronger than once thought due to Arkansas’ recent emergence. LSU’s only decent victory against Washington State certainly looks less impressive since they got smoked by UW. The Tigers have one more chance to make a statement outside of the SEC when #16 Xavier visits Baton Rouge later this month. It’s very possible that a 20-21 win LSU team could be NIT bound especially if they lack marquee wins against teams like Tennessee and Xavier. Coming into this season, I was hoping that LSU would compete for the SEC West and make an NCAA tournament appearance. These goals are still intact, but LSU will need to show some major improvement for either of these two things to happen. Was last night's loss at Utah an aberration or a sign of things to come? Stay tuned as we will learn a lot more about this team after the next three games.

It's Year One for Coach TJ. He can't turn around 10+ years of what Brady did to our program over night. We can miss the tourney for the first 2 years as far as I'm concerned.
Let him have 2 full years to recruit players that he wants and then we can have this conversation again.
Hanging in the balance....

Unfortunately LSU won't win @ Bama. We rarely do. Tad Pad is always tough too. I will count our lucky stars that Ole Miss has lost seemingly their entire team but Huertas from injuries so that game is somewhat winnable.

You know what team gave each of them their worst ever loss home their home court in their current arenas ? The LSU Tigers.
And that team was coached by John Brady ??

Good Read Swift.
Also, I believe ole miss has lost 2 starters for the season?

Stro you do a good job looking at lsu basketball with a level head. I agree with you that the first few SEC games will have to set the tone for the rest of the year. We can only hope this team figures it out quickly cause the season is here now. No more room for errors.

I do remember that. Wasn't it like 80-58 or something. That said, other than the Jaime and Bass season, we've lost there for as long as I can remember in about the past 10-15 years.

I'm convinced LSU will win more SEC games this year than many predicted going into the season. They should also compete in several road games. I just feel the change in team leadership will produce different results. They'll still have hostile crowds to deal with in the road, but at least they won't feel like it would better to crawl into the student section on the road than return to their own bench to deal with Brady.

both happened in 1999-2000. at Alabama: 93-60; at Oxford: 97-53.

I agree with this, hopefully we can stay healthy.

How many bids do you expect the SEC to get this year? I know everyone sort of assumes a 10-6 conference record will get us in, but I'm not so sure that's true this year. Remember there have been years when the Pac 10 and ACC only got three bids. With the SEC's conference RPI presumably being low, 3 or 4 bids wouldn't shock me for the SEC (and UT and Arkansas seem to have 2 on lock at this point).

I think sec gets 4 maybe 5.
UT,kentucky,florida,arkansas.
Also, we could be talking about another team that gets hot in a month.

SS couldn't agree more.
I think at this point, this team is still very much an unknown.
They have a few pieces that could make them a pretty good team. But, it is a must for them to start getting some production out of CJ.
Bama is going to be tough. But, I'm sure they'll want to make up for their disappointing showing against the Utes. Look for a typical barn burner Sun. Hopefully the Tigers can find a way to put the ball in the hoop.
Last night, they just picked a bad time to forget how to score.

10+ years of what Brady did

It's pretty early, but I'd say 4-5 considering how the Big East will suck up so many of them.

Slack, my apologies, I meant this particular season. I was in an hour long meeting and actually thought about how I should probably change the title.

Thanks, I try to be somewhat objective when I attempt to break down the team and their performance.

Also, depends on the at large. There will be a few teams that get the automatic berth for winning the conference tournament.

I've been to the Tad Pad multiple times, sat on the bench twice there, and am 100% convinced without a shadow of a doubt that they don't have regulation rims. It's carnival rims, no doubt about it.

last night was just the perfect storm.
a 7'2 big man
utah couldnt miss, it seemed.
i was feeling confident and very happy when the score was something like 33-30 but everything just went to hell in a handbasket really quick.
id be much more concerned about facing 'bama if they still had richard hendrix.
you got to feel for chris johnson, its not his fault he's so damn skinny . not his fault bobo morgan wanted to ride the bench at ucla either, he's doing what he has to do for the team, its just not enough. he did have probably his best offensive game of the year though.
bama does a lot from the perimeter, so we are going to have to defend the 3 point line as good as we have all year to win. gee always seems to light it up against LSU.
i agree, id be very satisfied with 2-1 in that 3 game stretch. south carolina is a good team and will surprise some people.

Its all about individual matchups, our ability to have 5 guys on the floor who can make(some nights) mid-range to long-range jumpers will cause some teams trouble. That being said teams with good post players(there are only a few in the sec)will give us fits unless TJ commits to double teaming the post more.I still see us winning 9-10 games in the conference.
