They just want to build an Oreo outfield. No big deal.

Landry goes into the game when up by 8 runs. Not exactly defensive strategy being thought out too deep. You can disagree with my opinion. I just rather Landry in CF.

Dean is a 10th rounder. That's about as high as he will get drafted. It's in his best interest to go pro now. Hard to say who is returning at this point. I suppose the lineup next year could possibly be. (dont hold you're breath)

C. Gibbs
1B. Ochinko
2B. DJ
3B. Hanover
SS. Nola
LF. Schimpf
CF. Mahtook
RF. Mitchell
DH. Dean

Holy Santa Clause shite!!!!!!!!! that potential team might go undefeated. haha

But it would be dumb to knowingly put people in the most effective positions. So regardless of the score, if Landry were better defensively in Center Field he would be in Center Field whether Mahtook was on the field or not.

That you rather Landry in CF and him actually being better than Mahtook are too completely different things.

It's easy to forget the great grabs by Landry after 1 ESPN highlight. Look I know people swear by this white kid, like a cult following, and it's great. Landry just looks faster and a better fielder.

given Manieri's moves this year, I stil say if he were better, he'd be there.

I'm not forgetting any great grabs by Landry. But not every ball needs to be dove for. You don't see Mahtook diving for as many balls because he gets better jumps than Landry did. Landry relies very heavily on his make-up speed.

Dean could go, or he could return. I think (God forbid) if we don't win it all he will return for his senior season. He may improve his draft position by being an everyday player since signability will not be a concern by the team that will draft him. Too much is made about "leverage" on negotiations against teams. History shows if a team believes they can sign you (you are a senior or openly state you are going pro) then teams see less risk in drafting you higher. Therefore, Dean could actually improve his draft postition by returning next year with a great season at the plate and an everyday position player. We'll see what Dean decides but I think the chances of him returning are decent.

My question is this then. If he was so great in the field why did it take injuries and a .230 BA for him finally to see the field during a mid week game as a sub? We played freshmen last year. Landry lack of bat gave him a chance, not his superior fielding abilities.

C - Micah Gibbs
1B - Blake Dean (he could stand to go up in the draft a good bit as a power-hitting, everyday 1B)
2B - Tyler Hanover
SS - Austin Nola
3B - Beau Didier/Wet Delatte
LF - Leon Landry
CF - Mikie Mahtook
RF - Johnny Dishon
DH - Pick your poison

SP - Anthony Ranaudo
SP - Austin Ross
SP - Daniel Bradshaw (will start out as the #3 guy likely)
SP - Chris Matulis
SP - Randy Zeigler/Zack Von Rosenberg

RP - Paul Bertuccini
RP - Ben Alsup
RP - Shane Riedie
CL - Matty Ott (At least to start the season)

You are confusing what got him into the line up and what is keeping him in Center Field. It's pretty simple to see that every time Mahtook is on the field he is in CF, regardless of who else is in the line up.

Yes, he needed Landry to go into a slump to break into the line up. But if Landry were that far superior to Mahtook in CF, then he would have been in CF for the games they were both in the line up for, when Ochinko was on the bench and Schimpf was at first.

With the exception of the dropped ball in the rice game Mahtook has been money. I dont see him being moved.

In a local tv interview after he was drafted, he made it pretty clear he wasn't interested in returning unless he was a position player.

I think with Luquette having TJ surgery, that either Didier, Dozar, or Mason Katz will be worked in behind the plate to give Gibbs a break every once in a while and get someone ready for the following year.

maybe, maybe not
from a Times Pic yesterday

He got calls from the Philadelphia Phillies in the fourth and seventh rounds, but he turned down their offers because he felt the money was insufficient. He was finally picked in the 10th round by the Minnesota Twins.

Dean isn't saying whether or not he will return to LSU next season, but just the chance of that happening is a positive for LSU.
