Berry?

No way. He’s an all American. Just don’t know where he will fit in in the field

He doesn't if it's not at 3rd (IMO). I think he's going to give him every opportunity and then some to play 3rd.

The starters we take into game one will likely be the same starters at the end of the year.

I doubt that. 6 of 7 of the everyday players should be stepping up and stick, but usually 4 or so guys are close and they battle it out for two spots. They could also platoon players depending on the pitcher.

But it won’t be anything like Mainieri’s deal where it looked like Fall ball and preseason camp told him nothing and we experimented all season.

He could play 2B or 1st or DH

When the spring comes around and it’s crunch time, I think you’ll see some shuffling. But you’re right, he’s going to give him his shot. He’s not coming out the lineup

Johnson is less fickle than PM. Not only will he give players their shot, but he won't cling to favorites either.

That is such a good point, ell. Mainieri let his personal feelings (favorites) factor into his decisions.

Johnson = analytical decisions Mainieri = emotional decisions.

A lot of people talking about Drost; but he better get it in gear if he wants to be in that lineup or on the roster.

I haven't seen the updated numbers for the fall (I know Lester had compiled something about a week ago from Scuba's writeups); but I've been to every scrimmage but 1 and Drost has cooled off. He started on fire the opening weekend, but lately has been inconsistent, while Pearson and Stevenson have appeared to be a little more consistent with the bat. Last night scrimmage, Drost looked completely lost at the plate. I think he had 3 K's on the game.

Could Dugas play RF and Berry in LF?

Hard to say. I don't think Berry has ever played OF in college and hasn't done so in any of the scrimmages for anyone to evaluate that.

But I'm assuming you are putting Crews at CF in that scenario and to me that would be a slower than avg. college OF. I'm not saying any of those 3 are slow (Berry has actually been attempting steals in the scrimmages), but compared to your typical OF, none of those players have elite speed, and you need at least 1 of them to be or closet to it I think.

I’m going to update stats in a few hours. Just need to move this weekend numbers over

Drost went 2-8 2BB 2K’s this weekend

No one in the OF outside of Crews really stood out this weekend. Gio did ok compared to his previous ABs

Normally I would say slide Berry to 1B and Morgan to CF but Drost is going to take the SEC by storm next year.

He may sacrifice at least one position on the infield seeing how strong Thompson has looked.

Morgan to CF

Morgan did play in CF some towards the end of the scrimmage last night; so it appears Johnson is open to the idea and thought about it.

Morgan to CF and Doughty to SS opens up a whole lot of doors offensively. I know most hate the idea but it's an option to get bats in the lineup. And, no, I'm not giving up on Thompson but I see a world in which the lineup has 8, maybe 9, better hitters than him. Too early to tell just yet.

I would guess we see that alignment at some point. I think we're going to see a bunch of different line ups. He's building up positional versatility it seems.

Berry has played 3rd, he played 1st for Team USA.
Doughty has played 2nd, 3rd, and now SS.
Morgan at 1st and CF
Merrifield at 3rd and has played 2nd in JUCO.
Jobert has played 3rd in summer league, 1st in JUCO and Summer league, and I think has mixed in some corner OF.

When you mix in the DH spot, you'll have some maneuverability within the line up to keep a lot guys in the line up every day even if they move around the diamond.

If you're also trying to help guys with their draft profile, pushing guys up the defensive spectrum is a way to do that. Berry at 3rd, Doughty at SS, and Morgan in CF does that. It doesn't have to be every game. Just enough to show capability and allow other guys to rotate in.

I also feel like only a handful of guys will play every game (ie more than 50 regular season games).

McManus
Milazzo
Morgan
Jobert
Doughty
Merrifield
Berry
Thompson
Drost
Pearson
Stevenson
Crews
Dugas
Gio
Bianco

And you have to fill out 9 slots on the lineup card. That's freaking hard.

Merrifield showing what he did at LSUE was no fluke!

Yeah, but there are some early season cream puffs that should allow for some liberal early substitution. Aside from moving guys around the diamond to change up who actually starts the games, there will be plenty of opportunity to get guys time in the non-conference.

No way the open day line up is the line up at the end of the year. I would say there are several spots still to be decided. I would hope he does juggle the line up in the early season. Thompson hasn’t had a great fall so I wouldn’t lock him down at SS yet. Stay tuned, you may see a couple other experiments

They have had him at 2nd a couple of times or so that I've seen in scrimmages. Always towards the end and for just an inning or 2.

He's had him at all 3 positions regularly. 2nd the most, but has played some SS every weekend in at least 1 or 2 scrimmages.

He has played 2nd in scrimmages too. He was at 2nd for part of yesterday's scrimmage. Has been 3rd primarily though.
