Nah, I pull for the Saints (although that's really in passing interest, as most of my dedication is given to LSU). I just don't know how the defender could have done anything different. He didn't lower his head, avoiding helmet to helmet. Just because Brees went down hard he's going to get flagged.

As a former official of various sports, I don't give referees a hard time and I usually don't complain about them. I'm always the guy at a party that looks around and says "that was the right call" when everyone else is bitching about their team getting hosed. If it were the other way around, I'd say the same thing: easy call and clearly roughing the passer with the current rules that are in place.

Can you Boxtards promise me that the week of Feb 9th, none of you will start a thread that says "Daniel Martinez drives under the speed limit in the left lane" or something stupid? That shite is so played out. Those threads should be every blue moon, not every damn game.

I agree. But if there was one time to do it this year, it would be this week with JFF.

I posted in it...

Yes, but all of my posts are thoughtful and meaningful contributions to the forum.

I think it's a bad call.

Here is the rule:
quote:

(c) In covering the passer position, Referees will be particularly alert to fouls in which defenders impermissibly use the helmet and/or facemask to hit the passer, or use hands, arms, or other parts of the body to hit the passer forcibly in the head or neck area (see also th e other unnecessary roughness rules covering these subjects). A defensive player must not use hi s helmet against a passer who is in a defenseless posture — for example, (1) forcibly hitting t he passer’s head or neck area with the helmet or facemask, even if the initial contact of the defender’s helmet or facemask is lower than the passer’s neck, and regardless of whether the defensive player also uses his arms to tackle the passer by encircling or grasping him;

Official NFL Rules - Page 75 of the .pdf

It looks to me the ref applied the rule correctly and made the right call.
