2001, Florida doinked the last game to Tenn (lucky for us) or we would have played in the SEC CG.

But playing us didn't keep them out of the SECCG that year.

1996 LSU lost to Florida and Alabama, both LSU and Bama were 6-2, so they went to the SEC CG on the tie breaker. A win over some other SEC E and we play Fla in the SEC CG.

2007 Fla lost to LSU and finished 1 game behind UGA and Tenn in SEC. They beat UT, but lost to UGA, so not sure how the 3 team tie break works out.

2005 Florida lost to LSU and finished 1 game behind UGA, who they beat, in SEC E.

Yes, '96 and '05 you are right. I had forgotten they were that close in '05. I put '96 out of my mind because I didn't want to think of what they would have done to us in the SECCG.

Still, I don't buy the theory that playing each other in the regular season has much impact on whether we play in the SECCG. Rematch games happen frequently in the SECCG. LSU, Florida and Auburn have each played two rematch games in the SECCG.

No, that was in response to your comment that only 2006 did both have division winning type teams.

So 6 rematches, but none among the permanent opponents: LSU-Fla, Bama-UT, UGA-AU.

Nuts4,

Going by HTown's recollection, that makes a minimum of 3 or 4 times the rivalry greatly factored into the possibility of LSU-Fla meeting up in Atlanta, over 20 yrs.

And LSU blew for five of the 20 seasons('92, '93,'94,'98,'99) with no bowl chances, thus it has factored around once every five years for LSU-Fla(3 times in 15 seasons where both contended), 20% of the time mimimum.

And as mentioned the SECCG has featured a rematch of a regular season game a total of six times (1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2010), none of which were amongst permanent regular season rivals, 0-for-20 permanent foe rematches! Is that stat correct? Hard to believe if true. Then again, maybe not.

The team who won the regular season game is 5-1 in the rematches, the lone exception being in 2001 when LSU defeated Tennessee in the championship game after losing to them in the regular season. Which stands to rationale, that if the regular season loss alone wasn't enough to deny a school a trip to Atlanta, beating them when you couldn't the first time, is rather daunting.

That, and the SEC having the Natty Champ emerge 10 of the last 20 yrs(Fla 3, Bama 3, LSU 2, Tenn 1, Aub 1)..tough sledding to want play the powerhouse of the state of Fla, and the toughest division in D-1!

Yep, its true. Here's all the match ups

LINK

Alabama has been in the SEC CG 7 times and played Florida every time. Only Florida has won more SEC CG than LSU

If that stat alone doesn't wake up the doubters, what will?

0-for-20 is beyond "a trend" my friend, it's a rationale, an hypothesis.

Would be interesting to see how close UT-Bama and UGA-AU have been to rematches.
