If I recall correctly, that game was supposed to be the season opener for both teams. At some point during the offseason, VT surreptitiously scheduled a game before LSU, essentially as a preseason contest to prepare for LSU.
I remember this as the major answer. 1st game for both teams. VT was able to (very late) move another game before ours, and I do remember Beamer saying it was because LSU was good and he wanted to be able to work the kinks out before playing us. It was too late for us to do the same thing (or else we had more class than to do so, IDK).

Saban was furious about it being "bush league" and being "ambushed". Some media types made a point of Saban being shown up by the crafty Beamer.

Either way, they beat us pretty good, but our defense was solid- don't think they drove for a score from beyond midfield. We did have a lot of turnovers that gave them the short field.

They ran out of beer at all the bars, maybe that's it?

I drove in day of the game, and had heard about what VT fans called a riot the night before. I assuming this was the cause. I always just assumed it was due to the 2am bar closing law

They were supposed to make a return trip to BR in 04 but them and ESPN scheduled that made for TV season opener vs. USC in DC. Va Tech was scared to open up the season with USC then LSU so they backed out of the LSU return trip all the way until 2007.

That was it. Now I remember. Bunch of pussies.

We couldn't get any momentum. Skyler Green or Domminck Davis had a punt return for a TD but it was called back. VT had a stacked Defense and Mauck was a 1st year starter. Recipe for disaster.

Needless to say, outside of one of those kickoff classics I don't see Va Tech coming to Baton Rouge again and I know LSU will not go back to Blacksburg

1000% agree here.

Well Va Tech, isn't exactly known for their OOC scheduling. Prior to our game in 02, their toughest OOC game was Little State University. It has picked up a little since then, but not much. 3 nuetral site games(2 of which in the DC area), our game in 07(which they wanted to cancel), and maybe a home and home with average A&M and Nebraska teams. A few years ago they even agreed to a game against a team that had not started playing football yet(not a VA team)
They got into the national spotlight playing a Boise State schedule. And their fans act like they have the history of Bama or Michigan

We'll, that's another game we can put an asterisk bnext to, to denote that Saban didn't lose because of his coaching.

Everybody respects that little bitch as a CFB coach, but it's time for someone to call him out for being such pussy.

I recall us getting beat pretty bad

It was nothing like the skull-dragging they got when they nfinally came to Baton Rouge, but it was ugly. LSU was its own worst enemy with about half a dozen dropped passes and a bunch of timely penalties.

also a bunch of BS penalties called. I remmeber Dom Davis had a kickof return for TD called back that would have changed that game. it was a big set up from the get go
