I considered similar things around the time of the hire, but it's worth noting, we're not even really doing that here. That may have been the plan at first, but Matt Canada was too much of a prick, and so now we've got Ensminger as OC. He's done a much better job than I expected, but it's not like teams are lining up to steal him from us.

All in all, the strategy of going economical at head coach and investing more in coordinators will only work as long as you happen to find guys who can all work together without ego (since the HC will have a harder time pulling rank if the coordinators know they're more valuable than he is) AND as long as not many teams are doing it. You already have to accept investing in hyped up OCs and DCs means that they will leave you sooner to take HC gigs elsewhere. If more and more schools are willing to overpay coordinators, there just won't be enough talent to go around, and schools will be overpaying for shitty coordinators instead of shitty head coaches.

I was watching football all day Saturday and couldn’t help but see extremely mixed results from high-dollar superstar hire guys like Chip Kelly, Jimbo Fisher, James Franklin, Urban Meyer, Tom Herman, etc. and I was thinking of reasons why some of them are succeeding while others are generally looking like shite or flat out underperforming while Ed Orgeron is killing it, and I really don’t think that the current state of college football is conducive to spending $8MM/year on a head coach.

Chip Kelly and Jimbo are in their first year with a program. Nick only won 7 games in his first year with Bama. Jimbo has done fine just not great, and Chip Kelly has been a dumptster fire, but its...UCLA. The first year is a wash.

Tom Herman beat Oklahoma and had Texas ranked 6th in his second year.

James Franklin won 11 games the last two seasons and is 6-2.

Urban Meyer, I just...yeah Urban Meyer, 77-9, real waste of money.

Yes, Ed is having a good season. But the issues from last season are well documented. Not apples to apples comparisons here.

high-tier-but-not-homerun X’s and O’s HC when you can instead get a guy who’s an elite motivator, recruiter, and has the ability and knowledge to give structure to the program and lock down an important position like the D-line or O-line

1. Nobody thinks they are hiring a "high tier but not homerun" coach. You don't know that until after.

2. Aren't we past the whole "Ed isn't doing anything but motivate people" stage?

3. I'm reading this again, and I just can't go through all of the points, but I will just say that no, no I do not believe the inflating of a staff with analysts relieves the need for a good head coach.

Analysts are important, but just because Ohio State, and Texas lost last week doesn't mean that good head coaches aren't worth the money.

And none of these programs are "screwing themselves financially." Where does this even come from? Is there a salary cap that I'm not aware of?

You spend when you want a good product. It's how we got Nick Saban. If Ed Orgeron keeps winning he's not going to keep being this Honda Civic of coaches you are describing, he will demand a healthy raise in his contract and then he will be expensive too.

Geaux Tigers.

Yeah.

I mean people laugh at A&M for spending $75m on Jimbo. That's a little under 1/10th of LSU's entire endowment, but it's less than 1% of A&M's.

If it's worth it for them, then it's worth it. If he fails, it's a drop in the bucket for them.
