Hope this is not another Hal Hughes

I kind of describe Safford as a lefthanded Tyler Hanover. He was a great little player for us, and like Tyler, Will is in a small package, but he’s hard-nosed and has a chance to be a very good player,” Mainieri said. “He can play a lot of different positions and he’s someone I kind of consider my kind of guy. He’s just a little gym rat type.”

It's D1Baseball's fall report, but not behind a paywall.

For those that weren't able to read it before or weren't going to click on a blind link.

Very long read but an extremely good read! This team "could" end up being very very good! My God we have some arms on this team! Let's hope they all pan out!

Oh...

Holy shite that was in depth

Still expect the hitting to be very shaky to start but the pitching is soooo good that I envision a lot of 2-1, 3-2 wins until the hitting can catch up

Safford is both a better overall athlete and a better hitter than Hughes. He was a starting defensive back on a state championship football team surrounded by D1 players.

And he saw time in the outfield during the fall as they were looking for ways to get his bat in the lineup and seeing how many positions his athleticism would allow him to play.

Do you ever remember a time where we were looking to get Hughes' bat into the line up? Has Hal Hughes ever been described as an athlete?

This probably still isn't all the way right, but it's closer to what we saw by the end of fall, plus Travinski.

Exciting news hearing about Hilliard throwing in the low 90s at times, with his curveball that could be nasty. Hopefully he can stay healthy.

I agree with your starting lineup. I think DH will be a revolving door till two players separate themselves into a platoon situation.

Sidenote. My daughter is a good softball player at 12 yrs old but is still very short. She's a big LSU baseball fan and loves going to the Box with us. So I pulled up LSU Sports.NET to show her how small Hanover was and how he was still a big time player for LSU.

csb.

Project, I saw you mention in a thread the other day about some other teams experiencing arm injuries to pitchers already and someone asked a follow up on if it is any major pitchers or SEC teams that affect LSU. But I never saw a response. Anything more you have to add to this?

I will try to find some of them. I don't remember if there were specifically SEC ones. I know South Carolina has a few guys coming back from injuries, but they are guys that sustained those injuries at JUCO and that's why they made it to South Carolina in the first place.

ETA: on a non-pitcher injury note, Jerrion Ealy will not be playing baseball for Ole Miss this spring due to a shoulder injury from the LSU game.

SS, 3rd and DH are still a competition. I think Cranford eventually beats out Arnold at SS just because of his defense

Well, I guess that game proved to be a double win for LSU.

I kid, I kid.
