First of all, I did not see this problem coming. OBJ didn't seem to have this problem last year, IIRC. And for whatever reason, he's either infected the other receivers w/the dropsies, or caught the disaese from one of the others, as its not just him. They are all doing it.

I've seen this problem before w/LSU teams. For those of you that can remember it, the Katrina game against Arizona State was wrought w/early drops. I guess the other famous dropsie disease was that inflicted upon Brandon Lafell. He had a problem, early in his career.

Apparently though, this is a problem that can be fixed. Doucet and the others in the Katrina game went on to the NFL, as did Lafell.

For those of you that have played the position before, what's going on? Why are these guys dropping balls? How does a coaching staff fix this?

Thanks in advance.

they are wanting to run before they secure the catch is basically the reason for dropped passes. it isnt hard to fix at all just need to look it in all the way before you turn your head to look for running room.

My daughter suggested that they all should have to carry a football for the week and everyone is encouraged to try and get it from them.

They're receivers, not running backs

Wr's need to watch the ball all the way into their hands and also catch with their hands away from their bodies.

And in the event they do catch it, quit giving ground and losing yardage. I can appreciate trying to make a play but not at the expense of losing a first down.

Drop the ball ride the pine the rest of the game. And if say someone like Williams, Magee, Fobbs etc comes in leave them in for the remainder of the season unless they drop a ball.

This is really hurting the team. We went from a team afraid to throw because of a poor qb to a team afraid to throw on third down because you don't want to risk to wr's dropping the ball.

You have to put the emphasis on looking the ball all the way in.

Have them run some gassers after practice if they drop a ball the staff deems catchable.

In years past, I held my breath on third and long because I was afraid of an INT, or the QB would break it off and try to run, come up short. Now, I hold my breath because I think there is less than a 50% chance the receiver will hang on to the football.

Okay. That's some of it... What about when mett hits a receiver in full stride and he drops?

Not all our drops have been throw-hit in chest-run before catching ball. You see all these mid level teams having stellar passing games and we can't catch the balls that hit us in the chest or in stride?

People can blame the Oline play, they can blame mett, and they can blame the play calling. While they all may have minor flaws, holding onto the ball is my biggest concern. We catch certain balls and that game isn't close. The momentum stays with us. We aren't running on 3rd n long. And so on.

We have some great receivers. Boone is playing the best right now, Love OBJ, shep is more of an athlete than a receiver (don't fault him) and I still believe Landry will leave here as a top 5 lsu receiver of all time.

They're in a funk. They need a slump buster bc We've seen them all play better than they played last night.

Have them run gassers if the drop a catch or if they catch the ball with their bodies. They need to learn to catch with their hands. They will never be consistent if they don't.

Sharp route running is the key to catching balls because you are in a "ready" position coming out of your break...our guys run lazy routes

Yep. A catch with your body is much easier to jar loose or drop when you're trying to transition to "carry mode" . Catch with your hands, away from your body, and pull the loaf of bread to the basket. Doesn't need to be rolling against your body.

The whole team just needs to be more disciplined and focused. I just can't help but think that they are still hungover and under a lot of pressure to produce the same results from last season, getting back to the SECCG and BCSCG. We have the right coaching to fix this. It will not be a factor in 2 weeks.

Sit them for a bit.
Route running is sloppy,
Using chest vs. hands,
Go out and get the ball and look it in all the way (lots of drills for fundamentals,
Run north/south, vs. lateral - this ain't high school and the DBs are fast.
These kids are great competitors, very fast, but fundamentally poor at catching and running after catch. It can be corrected with LOTS of reps.

The receivers are all capable of catching the ball consistently, the most reliable hands right now would have to be wright or boone. OBJ as well as Sheppard look for yac yards so much they dont look the ball all the way in, because they are thinking about their next move before they have the ball secured. As for Landry he has great hands so Im not worried about a few drops by him. As they all play more with Mett they'll get in a rythm as well as Mett as long as we give him time in the pocket we can throw on anybody.
