LSU losses in 1998 were by: 1, 12, 3, 6 (OT), 6, 3, 27.

Average loss margin was 8.28 points

1999? 34, 1, 21, 26, 1, 19, 6, 13

Average of 15.13 points

2020? So far: 10, 4, 37, 13, 38

Average of 20.4 points

So LSU's losses this season are on average by 20+ points, which is worse than 1998 and 1999! Think about that. This isn't even counting UF that may boat race LSU.

If LSU loses by 1 vs UF it is still only bringing it to 17.2 margin in losses.

If LSU loses UF and Ole Miss each by 1, then it is 14.85 points loss on average, and basically matching 1999 which came after a 4-7 season implosion and loss of both coordinators from the 1997 team.

This is atrociously bad, but keep saying its not worse than 1998/1999.

Doesn't have anything to do with margin of victory. Presumably the losing team would also score more

“We are so much better on defense right now than any part of the season last year. I feel with Bo Pelini has come in and brought a new energy, a new excitement. Dave Aranda did a tremendous job for us, but I’m glad we’ve moved to the 4-3," Orgeron said on Tuesday.

I said margin of defeat. As others stated, if teams are scoring more, so is LSU. Your argument makes no sense.

The sad thing is, yes it is heavily on the defense, but also on the offense. It's a team effort to be this record breaking.

Fair enough

But getting blown out in the 90s doesn’t look the same as it does now.

I ahouls Have said good teams.

The highest scoring offense in 2009 in the SEC was Alabama.

They average 36.0 PPG

The worst in 2009 (Vandy) averaged 16.3

The highest scoring offense in the SEC in 2020
Is again Alabama but now they score 49.2 PPG

The lowest scoring offense in 2020 is again Vandy who scored 14 point

My point is that now when you’re getting boat races it doesn’t look like a running back going for 205 yards and 3 TDS. It’s a QB dropping 450 and 5 TDS

And that’s 2009.

Not a lot of critical thinkers in this thread.

College FB might be higher scoring now but this team sucks just about like those late 90s teams did.

You’re going to get downvoted like nobody’s business but you’re not wrong in pointing out one of the many weaknesses in this argument.

O deserves an IMMENSE amount of criticism right now, but of all of the indictments against O this one might be the weakest. Setting aside the evolution of college football over two decades and the specific challenges of 2020, using average margin of victory or defeat as a measuring stick is fairly meaningless and sometimes falls apart under even the most basic of scrutiny.

We were within 1.1 points of leading the nation in average margin of victory in 2011.

We trailed Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State (by nearly 10 points) last year.

2020 LSU was better than 2011 LSU. 2020 LSU was light years ahead of the team that led the NCAA in average margin of victory in 2020.

With that said, this is still probably the worst position our football program has been in since Dinardo.

This is the worst LSU team since pre-Dinardo.

Can you try to explain this in English please?

1998 was the best 4-7 team in college football history

I get what you're saying but we're leaving mediocre wide receivers uncovered. This defense is trash and it has nothing to do with the athletes. The scheme is garbage. Can't be defended. You haven't seen an opposing qb look confused once this year. Defense is straight garbage and it has little to do with the players.

That 1998 was loaded on offense and kept us in pretty much every game except Arkansas. Herb Tyler, Kevin Faulk and Rondell Mealey played amazing. Mark Roman and Booger McFarland were awesome on defense, and Arnold Miller blocked all those field goals and extra points.

The Florida loss was a legit loss, and then there's the Arkansas blowout, but the other five losses very easily could have gone the other way.

LSU possessed the ball in the second half of the Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Alabama, and Notre Dame games either with the lead or a chance to tie or take the lead.

We could have been talking about a 9-2 team that goes to the Cotton Bowl to play the Longhorns in 1998. Just came up a little short. Five times.
