So what happened? LSU was top ten in defense and the bottom half in the country in offense. Despite having a running back and receiver both drafted in the 2nd round. 5 total including Etling.

BTW. You can be a great guy and a mediocre coach at the same time.

This is way overrated as being an all-time bad defense. A lot of that has to do with it following up a NC season where the defense was dominant, especially with a healthy Dorsey. But let’s look a little more closely at 2008:

Now, the Malveto defense wasn’t good enough for LSU at that time. They needed to be replaced. But they were pretty average, not bad. Not terrible. Certainly not all time bad. And all the offensive turnovers really hurt them.
