I remember Damien James coming up big from time to time.

Still, Dirty Thirty is probably my favorite LSU safety even if he wasn't the "best" in coverage.

Best free safety single play I can remember was Reid last year against bama, second would be chad jones sacking the qb in t town. Two plays that completely changed the game. LL was a beast

Chad jones may not have been as good talent wise but he was as clutch as they come.

Laron always made sure he hit the ball carrier as hard as possible. I loved that about him.
Even when someone had a long run, he made sure he pushed them hard enough out of bounds that they weren't coming back in the game for a few plays.
No i didn't like him celebrating big hits on big plays or first downs, but I like the message he always sent to the ball carrier.

Ryan Clark was pretty good, too.

I love all the people claiming so and so that played safety wasn't that good in pass coverage.

I guess some don't know the difference in a safety and a corner.

Laron = Reid and both > Chad Jones

I would take Reid in pass coverage over Laron, but I never recall Laron taking so many bad angles when coming up to defend short passes or defend the run like Reid has this year.

chad jones was pretty meh outside of 2-3 great plays, IMO.

The bat down on 3rd down vs. Miss St. is still one of my favorite defensive plays of all time. So clutch.

I liked it when he blasted the Arky receiver, but was called for a b.s. penalty.

Ryan Clark.
Not sure why, but Clark doesn't seem to get a lot of chatter. Dude was very good! He was in my speech class, so I always had an interest in watching him play. I'm no coach, evaluator or anything else, but I remember as a fan thinking "there's no way this guy doesn't make it in the NFL". He was incredible and always around the ball. Sure enough, he's had a very nice NFL career. Good for him.

You guys really need to do your homework. There is a damn good reason that in the 119 years of LSU football that only Billy Cannon and TOMMY CASANOVA have had their numbers retired.

TOMMY CASANOVA

It's difficult to classify Casanova as a safety, at least while at LSU - he played a hybrid position where he was all over the field, wherever Mac needed him - 1 part corner, 1 part safety, 1 part linebacker. He also ran the ball as kind of the final wave of two-way, "ironman" players - a kid too talented to keep off the field (although he didn't put up huge numbers offensively, he was one of the last of the LSU white tailbacks - at least prior to Hester, as segregation was ending in the SEC.)

I'll never forget that PP7 windmill on Jones' punt return. "Come on, brother! I gotcha covered!"

What was even better was the game day sign with the PP7 arm crank

Pretty much the text book definition of what a free safety does.

Yes and no. If I recall correctly, Cassanova would sometimes be put, man-up, on the other team's best WR. I am not aware of that being today.

I do believe Cassanova played FS in the pros

Yes. Sure. He was a hell of a player and a great enforcer. But thats all he really was. Bad pass coverage and its starting to show in the NFL. Hes had a solid year for the Jets this year though. But in the NFL they would rather have a pass coverage FS rather than a run stopping FS. Hes still 1 of my all time favorite Tigers.

Casonova, Hunt, Chad Jones, Steltz, Ryan Clark and Carrier were all great Safeties for LSU. Clark is by far the best NFL FS out of these players. I consider Laron in this group too. They are all good players, but I cant put Laron ahead of any of them. Physicality and intimidation, yes he was bigger and badder than all of them. But he was an average in pass coverage. Reid has a chance to be in this group too, but that remains to be seen.

Danny McCray gets a lot of hate by LSU fans because he gave up a lot of big plays, but we had him out of position. We had him playing the deep FS, when his game was better suited for a middle rover SS. The Cowboys love the guy and hes been a starter/ big time contributor since his rookie year.

And 1 of the more underrated safetys weve had at LSU was Brandon Taylor IMO. 1 of the best tacklers weve had.
