I think he is more worried about chasing a former gymnastics star.

Then explain what his exact point is relative to the post. Do you think that Lane is against the portal?

Yes, but just because he doesn’t like it, doesn’t mean that he won’t use it to his advantage. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Why is that?
Because the biggest issues are not of the NCAA’s doing, pretty simple.

I’d argue that the NCAA is responsible for the current state of the portal and NIL. Instead of being reasonable and trying to secure an amicable agreement, they fought tooth and nail to greedily hold their own power and eventually began losing court cases.

Their biggest issue was selectively enforcing their own rules but there is no reason or logic to suggest being more amicable would have done anything other than create the same chaos, only sooner.

Yeah I guess we are just going to have to disagree. I think Lane likes the fact that he has the portal at his disposal.

Sure there is, they would have had more control with a compromise agreement instead of completely opening the floodgates. They decided to go with the all or nothing approach for something they were destined to lose in court and cost them multi billion dollars and they’re still fighting in court - which they sort of have to now due to previous strategy.

Your assumption is that people would have been happy with the inch they were given and not want to take a mile. The last several years should tell you the opposite is true.

Negotiations usually include some give and take, the NCAA was absolutely against any compromise and ended up where they are now. Perhaps they would have had to given up a mile, but at least they’d have some say in the process. Fighting NIL for as long as they did showed their intent. The conclusion was inevitable.

The portal ought to stipulate that the player must show progress towards graduation. So many credits per year measures timeline progression. This could reinstall the notion that a player is also an academic student.

A player cannot transfer to another D1 school unless they earned enough credits to move up from the first year to the second, second to third, third to fourth, fourth to fifth, and fifth to sixth. After the sixth, eligibility extends via medical circumstances.

Nobody has really given a specific answer except for the guy that said he thinks Lane is against the idea of the transfer portal, which I just don’t quite agree with.

I agree. In what ways do you think he would have it changed that would have an effect on the post he was responding to?
