Yes, it does matter. It matters a lot. College Football playoff teams are judged on perception. Who did you beat? What were they ranked when you played them?
It matters to LSU’s playoff hopes that Clemson was a top 5 ranked team in week one. That ranking matters.
In week 11 and 12 of the season there are going to be many arguments on the difficulty of each teams schedules. Beating a team ranked in the top 20 in week 2 matters in the end. How many ranked teams did you beat, what were they ranked when you beat them? All perception.
Every possible playoff team is judged solely on perception. The AP shapes the voters perceptions of which teams get playoff berths.
