Does anyone know why Kim Mulkey went to LA Tech instead of LSU to play basketball?

Because back then, LaTech was the UConn of their day.

Back then it was tech, old dominion and Tennessee as the cream of the crop. Guess you could throw usc with Cheryl Miller

That’s what I thought, just wasn’t sure. Thank you for the response.

I think if Gunter had already been here, Mulkey would have come to LSU, and NCAA WBB history would be very different.

Sonja Hogg was the head coach, but her role was vision and promotion. She let Barmore coach. That is in no way intended to diminish her role. The Lady Techsters would not have been without either one of them.

LSU women's basketball wasn't even 2nd tier sport back then. More like 3rd tier in the athletic department hierarchy.

Tennessee wasn’t even that good yet. Barmore beat Summitt in 7 of their first 8 matchups as head coaches. (Of course she caught up later.)

Sonja was the face of the program. Leon was the real coach.

Leon had more basketball knowledge in his left little finger than anyone else in the state at that time.

LSU was coached by a Class C, that’s right, LHSAA Class C, named Barbara Swanner. Swanner undermined the previous HC named Jinks Coleman, who had taken LSU to the AIAW (before NCAA) national finals against Margaret Wade and Delta State, when they had Lucia Harris, from Lucedale MS.

LSU had the Aussie pair, Marie Bennie and Julie Gross. They also had Thelma McCoy and Annette Guillotte and other LA all-stars. In the regional they eliminated SFA and Sue Gunter, Baylor and the Flying Queens of Wayland Baptist. Marie Bennie married a Man by the last name of Jackson and left LSU after her sophomore year. Gross remained fir 4 years.

Marie Bennie Jackson is the mother of the WNBA great, Lauren Jackson. Truedat and typed from memory.....
