Yeah, because this matters...

"Non Jock" football coaches:
Petrino
Jimbo
JoPa
Many of them in the NFL

I could on but I won't.

I could on but I won't. (edited if Jimbo played didn't realize it). point being that these guys aren't considered "jocks" or big time football players, they are more cerebral types that understand the game.

Why is Joe Montana's son playing QB for Tulane and not some powerhouse school. Was his father unwilling to teach him how to play the position?

Got him a scholarship at a D-1 College despite not being nearly as good as is father.

Not bad actually

All of your examples played football. Jimbo won awards as a college qb.

Well if this is the standard then will you be happy if our offensive line under Mawae is "not bad"

LSU isn't the Salvation Army and Mawae isn't a charity case. We're going to hire the man best for the job. If that's Mawae, great. If not, also great.

And you ask me if I'm kidding too? Who the "best" is is purely subjective. Who is best for the program involves a lot of factors. Do you really think that Frank Wilson was the best RB coach available a few years ago or did her bring something else to the table?

Here's a twist. When we are recruiting 5* LA players like say, Cam Robinson and selling them about how we take care of our own in Louisiana when the stay in state, what is the message you are sending these kids when LSU passes up a former LSU player of Mawae's stature to hire somebody else? That they can come back to LA for a job after they prove their ability somewhere else first?

That's probably the dumbest post in the thread...no offense.

BTW I am all for the Mawae hire. I just don't like the logic that because he was a great NFL player then he will automatically be a great coach and that LSU would be stupid to go in a different direction

There's no guarantee Grisham would be a good teacher.

Who to say whether the former NFL line coaches just let go would not leave after a year to return to the NFL. Who is to say that they would be willing to spend the time to recruit. If Les and Cam are on board with Kevin then I would send a limousine. He is very interested and has the chest.

For one, Frank had proved himself as a recruiter with major NOLA connections and as a position coach prior to coming to LSU.

Also, you don't get an OL coach to just recruit. That will be part of it, and I think Mawae would be an assett recruiting, but being able to coach up, teach technique and develop raw talent is ESSENTIAL to being an OL coach. You don't just roll the ball out and let em have at it. The offensive line is the most important unit on the field. If we want to be able to routinely beat Bama and win SEC titles, we have to have a dominant OL.

AGAIN: Mawae might be the guy for us. I don't know. You don't know. If he gets hired, that means he's committed to put in the hours and said all the right things. I trust Cam and Les will not leave any stones unturned. All that said - Wouldn't you like us to take a look at some guys with coaching experience and a track record of success in developing and coaching up O-linemen?

I'm not sure Mawae is a true candidate based on one real factor.

Reading between the lines, this was a Cameron decision...the decision was made a while ago...and it's very possible that the replacement has already been selected.

So, while everyone is debating the merits of Mawae as a coach, it could all be moot. Mawae may not be hired simply because the process is way too far along.
