he hasn't taught anyone how to play offensive line

Kevin Mawae taught over 300 NFL DL how to play OL over his 16 year career.

A huge recruiting tool

This is the only potential issue I see. His name and experience are a plus but he's never been on the recruiting trail. He'll have to be willing to give up a ton of family time, which he seems to be loving right now. Of course, of all the coaches in college football, Les is the best as far as family time goes.

Did stud coach or play at the NFL level? Then he's not better than the Moeller, Washington or Mawae

There's nothing to discredit because he hasn't been one. I don't think it's stupid to question the ability of Mawae as a coach though.

So your the dumbass who questions a Butcher when he cuts your filet after doing it for 18 years........

How the frick do you think Surgeons learn?

Anybody who did something at a high level for 16 years can teach another how to do it too......

This logic because he hasn't doesn't means he can't do it or is fricking super flawed.

Yeah, who cares?! Let's just hire Stud back since it's a bullshite position anyway
My point is that some people are trying to say the KM is not qualified to coach the OL and yet can't mention 1 person by name that is qualified.

We are not going to hire a "current NFL o-line" coach. Not going to hire from within the conference or another conference that is perceived to be a lateral move. That leaves smaller schools or promoting someone to a position coach level. If that in fact is the pool we will hire from, I like KM.

Kevin Mawae knows more about OL than 98% of those in his field...........ask anybody who coaches and has met him..........

I think Chicken needs to reboot Tigerdroppings after reading this thread.........Folks actually are discrediting Kevin Mawae as an OL coach? fricking unbelievable.

I'm not discrediting his coaching ability. He may be an awesome line coach and great recruiter. His lack of experience coaching kids is what worries me.

I don't think anyone is saying that he absolutely wouldn't be a good coach. People are saying we don't know. Because we don't. I'd like to get a guy with experience and success coaching at the Division 1 level at least. That is IN NO WAY saying that Mawae wouldn't make a great coach.

Not necessarily. Many brilliant minds do not make good teachers.

Maybe...but the logic that he is an absolute lock to be the GOAT is super flawed too.

I don't think he wouldn't be a good coach. I don't know if he would because he hasn't done it.

Like I've said previously, my major question is how much does he want to handle being a position coach at this level and all the rigors that come along with it. I hope this just isn't a way to stay close to his family while still being a part of football since his playing career is over.

But the interview process will sort thatout, I assume.

You dream small.

I'd like a coach who has 16 years of NFL experience, is in the upper echelon of respect amoung his peers, and a HALL OF FAMER

We aren't teaching calculus..........we are teaching offensive line technique where visualization and repitition is paramount......kind of like surgery or anesthesia.

Do you think being a college position coach means you know the position, or even a good coach?

I don't doubt his coaching ability at all, someone of his level knows how to play the game and I'm sure as he became a vet he helped out his younger teammates.

His incredible NFL career, LSU ties, and his experience with being heavily involved in the NFLPA meaning he should know better then most how to set up kids for success in the NFL should all work well in recruiting.

It's a risk cause he's unknown as a coach, but I'd hire him without thinking as an O-line coach

I assumed it was gonna be one of the Baltimore guys but this kinda swings the pendelum towards Kevin. I trust that Cameron and Les will be thorough (I have to think this is mainly Cam's call with Les blessing it.)

Essentially yes. Do you even know what a center does?
