The wide-ranging interview covered everything from Boutte’s take on the LSU quarterback situation, his high praise in particular for QB Garrett Nussmeier, the ankle and just how close he came – or did not come – to leaving LSU for Alabama in the offseason.

Here are some of the highlights of what Boutte had to say:

* On his relationship with quarterback Myles Brennan, who is back after being injured and out all last season, and his take on the play during the spring of Nussmeier, who is battling Brennan and Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels for the starting job:

“I’ve got a great relationship with all the quarterbacks, and I would say Garrett Nussmeier is gonna be a great quarterback for LSU. … He’s gonna lead LSU to win most of the games, to national championships hopefully. I look forward to watching him play.”

* On what it is about Nussmeier’s personality and skill set that separates him, from Boutte’s perspective:

“I would say Garrett can kind of do everything. He’s versatile, so that’s what I really like about him. I feel like anything you ask him to do he can do.”

The closer we get to the season the more I believe Nuss will win the job.

That's what it feels like, which is fine. The best QB should and will play.

He definitely has the highest ceiling of the three.

Good read, glad to have Kayshon on board.

As others have stated, this also leads me to believe Nuss will be our guy.

“I look forward to watching him play.”

He means like after he leaves for the draft right? Like after he plays this whole season.

Do we even know how often KB has been at practice? Not sure if he’s the guy I’d trust.

I get that sense as well. Brennan has his strengths and limitations (little mobility behind an uncertain OL). Daniels seems to have his as well (inconsistency throwing the ball). Nussmeier has his own concerns (minimal experience, a bit of carelessness with ball). But he might have the best combination of skill relative to the other two. Maybe he's not quite the passer Brennan is at this time...but he certainly has more escapability. He's not the threat Daniels is with his legs. But he's mobile enough to avoid the rush and keep plays alive (like a Baker Mayfield)

From the outside looking in he seems to have the most moxie of the QBs. Sometimes that gets you in trouble. But it also draws your teammates to you (IMO, that was Burrow's best attribute. He was ridiculously confident and his teammates, even the defensive players, believed and fed off that confidence)

When Kelly has talked about Nussmeier he's often mentioned having to live with some of the bad that naturally comes from a young QB with big time confidence. It very well may be that in year 1, where the expectations will be as low as they'll ever be for Kelly, he's willing to take bigger risk with Nussmeier knowing that the expectations to win every game won't be as crushing as they will be next season and on.

The vibe around LSU is not trending MBs way.

More and more people in the media keep mentioning Nuss and JD.

I hope MB can show out during camp and earn Kelly’s trust. I want him to succeed. But at the end of the day - Kelly wins and if he thinks Nuss is the guy then so be it.

I think a lot of people need to be prepared for Brennan transferring out if he doesn’t get the nod.

I think BK is pushing Nuss to the media to keep the kid at LSU. I think this is MB year and BK is using the media to make sure he keeps a solid string of future QBs.

I may be an idiot. Just the vibe I get. If Nuss is the guy then MB will be in the portal soon.

You’ll care about him when he’s catching TDs for the tigers next season. God you people can’t get over that crap can you?

I like Nuss better personally. I like QB's that are throw first with good mobility.

That interview put to bed any and all doubt about Kayshon being dialed in this year. LFG.

I agree. M.B. is a traditional pocket passer and makes the best decisions with the ball. Nuss has a strong arm, but forces the ball deep too often without accuracy and can run pretty decent. It will be one of those guys. Daniels is an athlete.

I'm not getting all the love for Nussmeier after watching him play last season. I know it's limited snaps, but he did not look good in any aspect (completion %, yards per attempt, TD:Int ratio).

But we get an interview from one of our receivers and he's suddenly the defacto starter game 1?

That's ludicrous. He's got about a 5% chance of being the starter.
