Holt was playing SS most of the fall opposite of Thompson until he got hurt.

Doughty was taking reps there by the end of the fall. I agree with Project, he is prob the backup. He even played SS with Thompson at 2B in G2 of the exhibition vs ULL.

And after him, the next guy is probably Cranford.

My money would be on Cranford. Doughty looked good there when he played in the fall but really hasn't had a ton of reps there. Holt is capable, and is very similar player to Cranford, but I don't know his injury situation. Bianco can glove it and throw it but it takes a little too long for the ball to get to first base. I'm sure Merrifield could handle it but I don't think he is the most athletic infielder we have. Simon is another option, depending on his injury situation. Plenty of options, but Thompson is clearly our best option in my opinion.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Safford slide in at 2B if Doughty moves to SS.

Cranford just gives you nothing offensively. And is just ok defensively

Did Doughty primarily play 2B this fall?

Primarily, yes, but played some SS and 3B, too.

If we ever wanted to do the gimmick of one guy playing all 9 positions in game, who would you go with: Doughty or Bianco?

Or Crews?

Bianco could probably do it best. He's played most of the positions anyway.

I don't think we would ever do that, but if I had to pick I would have to think Bianco. Not that Doughty or Crews couldn't do it, but we've seen Bianco have practice and game reps at multiple positions, in both the infield and outfield.

Catcher was also his primary position on his summer league team one year.

Crews and Doughty have both caught games in international competition for Team USA.

One summer Doughty played nearly every position for Team USA.

Bianco has also thrown an inning in summer league.

The advocate baseball “reporter” doesnt think there’s anything to cover before February.

At some point the sports editor is to blame as well.

Clearly he sucks too. He hired a guy last year that spent more time at weddings than he did at baseball games.

ETA: But let's not forget when he told us we could follow some other guy on twitter for game updates. And that guy had a private twitter account.

The new one is from Houston and has been working in Iowa and has never covered baseball. Should be fine…

ETA: hello, advocate downvoter

Just her tweeting a roster pic in the fall puts her ahead of Wilson Alexander.

It was deep in a reply to a random thread. I had trouble finding it the next week because it was buried. But your point still stands.

I remember reading a profile on Doughty coming out of high school. It read " He could probably play any position on the field and do it well."

It took him hurting his hand last year for us to find the right combo on the left side of the IF… only 13 games. Lol.
