that hit was illegal under the new rules also...hitting a defenseless player
No...no it is not:
quote:
(b) Prohibited contact against a player who is in a defenseless posture is:
(1) Forcibly hitting the defenseless player’s head or neck area with the helmet, facemask, forearm, or shoulder, regardless of whether the defensive player also uses his arms to tackle the defenseless player by encircling or grasping him; and
(2) Lowering the head and making forcible contact with the top/crown or forehead/”hairline” parts of the helmet against any part of the defenseless player’s body.
One can hit a 'defenseless player' in the body, etc with shoulder, etc.

The term barely is not in the rules. It was targeting.
no shite, sherlock. Thats why I also said
quote:
I think this hit should be used to show the errors inherent in the targeting rule.

It was maybe a borderline case but they are trying to send a message. I think that's the part that most of you guys aren't getting.
Or maybe you just don't like the message. Either way, doesn't matter. The game is changing and you're going to have to accept it or drop the sport.

? How is the defense supposed to commit to the tackle and then pull up a split second after the ball is released?
He had more than a split second to slow up but even if he didn't, the penalty was for targeting. Had he simply tackled him it would have been roughing the passer at worst

I have seen that exact hit flagged many times. Maybe the rule is different in the NFL but I have definitely seen guys not hit high and get called for hitting a defenseless player.
Now back to the concussions and player safety....is it safer to hit guys low or high?
Why is it runningbacks/ballcarriers can lead with their helmet and not get a penalty for targeting?

It wasn't a dirty hit, and it wasn't a particularly hard hit. He clearly led with the shoulder to the chest. But in the movement of the play there was high contact. It's close. I wouldn't have called it, but no one asked me to officiate. Can't really complain when the call can go either way. What is clear, however, is that it wasn't dirty and was clearly not intended to injure anyone.

the game needs to be a little more consistent with the rules...offensive player can stiff arm a defenders facemask and not get flagged...meanwhile if defender merely touches facemask its 15 yards. Also that same stiff arm done by a lineman is illegal hands to the face.

At that speed he was coming, there is no logical way for him to pull up. I think if he wraps him up and doesn't just shoulder him, no call would have been made.
This guy was not in the pocket and very capable of pulling it down and running for 70 yds (as we witnessed). I think it was a terrible call and should not be made when a qb is out of the pocket and running with the ball.
Plus, there was NO helmet to helmet or other contact to the head of the qb.
I have no clue on an appeal process, but it is unfair yet Miles will not appeal because there is no reason to piss off the league at this point for a benching that wont affect us in the long run.

Not sure where any of you see him "leaving his feet", he is pursuing a QB that already had one big run against him, you can see when he tries to roll is momentum away from the hit and ends up bumping shoulder pads. They are turning this into a pussy sport. But i blame Debo, if you are going to get the ejection call at least make it count

SMH
(so much holding)
I thought for sure they were finally going to call a hold (or two) on that one...
It was almost comical to see LSU D-lineman running after the QB with O-linemen riding on their backs during the "good" Auburn plays.

Hate the rule, love the rule, it is a rule and was the correct call.
