LSU coddles every single athlete

I know you didn’t say it exactly, but he post he replied to seemed like you were suggesting Emery was getting special treatment or being coddled relative to other football players.

I don’t love the word “coddled” really anyway. Are they given much more resources to be successful in the classroom than regular students? Of course. But why wouldn’t they? They are commodities whose play on the field has a direct financial impact on the university as a whole. Why wouldn’t LSU invest the resources in them
to keep them eligible?

Brother, he was academically ineligible for quite a while

True, but once you fall behind, it’s hard to catch up. The slate isn’t wiped clean every semester. It’s a cumulative effect. If Emery had to get his GPA up to a certain number or have a certain amount of credit hours towards his major, every semester and every class he’s taken and passed/failed/dropped still counts. And while he may have already done what it takes on his end, if the NCAA previously deemed him ineligible, then they have to deem him eligible before he can play. And they’re never in any hurry to do that. If you’ve ever dealt with the NCAA clearinghouse, you’d know what a clusterfrick it is.

But that doesn't mean Emery doesn't hold some accountability.

Of course he holds some accountability. Has he done anything to deny that? Has he said anything about blaming anybody else? Has he said anything period? He gets way too much hate for a guy who, in 5 years, has appeared to stay out of any legal trouble or trouble of any kind except academically.

And everybody on here shitting on him is doing it from the perspective of their own lives, how they grew up. Maybe Emery went to a terrible high school and wasn’t prepared for college courses, easy as they may have been for us. Maybe he has a learning disability. Or maybe he’s simply not good at school. Lots of kids aren’t and it isn’t necessarily a reflection of how much effort they put into it. And to the assholes who want him cut, that’s a great precedent to set for future recruiting. When coaches give their pitches to parents on why they should send their kids to LSU, a big part of it is the promise that they’ll prepare them for life after football. And I think Kelly actually means that more than most coaches. “Graduate champions.”

Time to cut bait with this guy. He hasn't shown that he is worth all this trouble.

John is a really down to earth kid. Really nice guy

Jacob Hester is still really close to the program and has gone to bat on air for Emery numerous times. And he doesn’t do that for just anybody. He, naturally, spends more time talking to running backs than any other position and has said that Emery is a good kid with good character, and it’s not a matter of effort with him. Or at least it hasn’t been since he’s fallen behind. But again, it’s cumulative. Once you fall behind, it’s hard for even good students to catch up. Obviously even harder for poorer students. For every “F” he made, he had to make a “A” to balance it out. If he lacked credit hours, you can only take so many per semester.

I think the fact that Kelly hasn’t just cut bait and Emery is still on the team speaks to the fact that he’s putting in the work. Kelly even said they put everything in front of him he would have to do to play this year, and he did every single one. Waiting on the NCAA to clear him and not being sure if he’d be eligible would explain why he was running 3rd team all camp, even behind guys who weren’t healthy.

Regardless, we have plenty of RBs, and long ago should have tempered expectations for him, prepare for him to not be a big factor, and acted like anything he’s able to give us at all is just lagniappe. But the constant shitting on him is just being a fricking a-hole. He doesn’t owe anybody here anything.

I find that RB depth is directly related to the fans patience level this year.

I think we can afford to cut him

To what end? What possible benefit would that provide? It’s not like he’s taking valuable reps from anybody running 3rd team. But the negative effects would be glaring. It’d be a terrible precedent to set and be a horrible look on its face, but you can guarantee it would be used to negative recruit against Kelly. “See, all that ‘family’ and ‘Graduate Champions’ bullshite Kelly spews is just that—bullshite. He doesn’t care about your son. Look what he did with John Emery.”

There is simply zero to gain by cutting him except to satisfy you assholes’ lust for your pound of flesh, deluding yourself into thinking you have personally been wronged because a guy didn’t live up to the expectations put on him in high school by nerds he’s never even met.

I’ve never understood trashing a player who is on the roster. I agree it sucks that Emery will not be available, but we have almost an entire season left to play after the FSU game. How about allowing the season to play out, instead of freaking out like a bunch of women, and trashing the guy?

I agree, will not trash him, but feel disappointed. That being said, it may be something out of his contro without knowing all the facts. I just hope he stays hungry, could be helpful later this s
eason. Luckily the RB room is deep. l
