His throw to Dillon over the middle that was dropped was the play that stood out to me the most.

From where I was sitting behind the defense you could see that Dillon was perfectly covered when Joe let the pass go. Yet he led Dillon perfectly ahead of the defender and by the time the ball got there it hit him square in the hands with the DB 2 yards behind DD. Should have been at least a 20 yard gain, maybe more.

Haven’t seen that kind of accuracy since Mett.

He will trust me. Just give it a little time. This was his first collegiate start ever in a big time venue against a top 10 team. I liked Etling but he never looked good against any defense with a pulse. Burrow showed more in his very first start.

Most every one of his passes were on target, placed well at an advantage for the receiver over the defender, AND... in stride with the receiver.

SCREW STATS. Did some of you watch the game or just check the boxscore this AM???

The man is a QB and a very smart leader. It was actually quite refreshing.

ETA: sorry OP, that rant should not have been addressed to you, but to the other stat gazers.

So less than 50 percent completion rate is above average?

Somebody needs to get in touch with Jordan Jefferson, Anthony Jennings and Brandon Harris and let them know about this news.

Each one of them will be thrilled to know that even though they took a ton of heat for having games where their completion percentage was below 50 percent, they were actually playing above average.

Who knew that 11 for 24 with 138 yards was considered "above average" these days.

“ is considered “above average” these days”

Our quarterback measurable‘s are probably going to be ranked in the triple figures in most categories. And while I liked for the most part what I saw from Joe, I’m not sure I’m ready to list his performance as above average. I am certainly not willing to list our overall offense performance as above average.

Having said that, the guy played his first significant role in a game in approximately two years. I thought he handled himself well at the line of scrimmage and he seemed pretty calm doing so for someone with as little Practice time as he has had.

If Miles Brennan put up those number you'd be buying rope at Home Depot this morning.

Absolutely!
Why can't fans see this.
He understands the game and game plan and executes it.
First start and he is miles ahead of most QBs.

His poise was certainly new to LSU quarterbacks. Not new to the rest of the football world. His play was average, but I think that had a lot to do with the average play calling (hopefully, on purpose). We'll see as the year goes on.

For context: against Alabama, Etling was 12-26 for 137. I don't recall feeling like Etling played an "above average" game because it was against a good defense.

How about the play right before that one??? The INT that was dropped by the Miami CB Dean.
