I'm still holding out hope they trade their #1 pick for a lot and a good team gets Burrow.

Benson got hit with the cheapskate title unfairly. It was actually GM Jim Finks who was the cheapskate that failed to build an offense around the defense Jim Mora put together.

The Saints franchise has been mostly a winning franchise since Benson brought them. The poor management days mostly fell under original owner John Mecom, who didn't have a clue, just like Mike Brown, how to run an NFL franchise. Mecom made poor decision after poor decision.

At one point the Saints were a worse franchise than the Bengals. With the rt QB and system, you can have a winner.

It sucks he's going there, but the good qbs rise to the top.

You lack comprehension skills baw? Snyder is definitely shitty but read what I said because I typed it the way I did with Jerry Jones & Dan Snyder in mind.

Plenty of good WRs and Mixon at rb. Two good TEs. Get him some protection and they can be good on that side.

The have a Tyler Eifert, Joe Mixon, Geno Atkins, A.J. Green and John Ross.

Eifert & Green are unrestricted free agents this offseason & aren't likely to re-sign there. Atkins has the ability to opt-out & become an unrestricted free agent this offseason himself.

Mixon wants a new contract & extension right now. A holdout or trade maybe coming up for him because he isn't going to get paid in Cincinnati.

John Ross only has the 2020 season left on his contract if the Bengals don't pick up his option for 2021 & based off his numbers so far over his career, they shouldn't do so.

I know he sees it as another huge challenge. Based on what I know about him, I don't see any way that he fails in the NFL. How great he's able to become will depend on how they build around him.

Real men thrive when being challenged. To be honest, Cincinnati has been a more successful franchise over the past 10 years than Miami so he's not as bad off as people think.

We have another one with poor comprehension skills. I clearly stated that the Saints have become a winning franchise since Tom Benson brought them in 1985. The terrible years, more importantly, the Aints years occurred under the shitty ownership of John Mecom.

quote:

In 1986, in one of his first personnel moves as Owner, he hired Jim Finks as president/general manager and Jim Mora as head coach.

quote:

In 1987, the Saints broke through with a 12-3 record and hosted their first playoff contest. In its first 17 seasons of existence, the Saints won a total of 73 games. Under Benson’s guidance, the franchise exceeded that win total in only eight years by 1992.

quote:

The Saints reached even greater heights in 2006, when he entrusted Executive Vice-President/General Manager Mickey Loomis to hire Sean Payton as head coach and sign free agent quarterback Drew Brees. Since those moves, the franchise has reached its highest point of success, posting a 119-85 overall record over the last 12 years, capped by the Super Bowl XLIV Championship.

quote:

Overall, since being purchased by Mr. Benson in 1985, the Saints have earned 11 playoff berths, six division titles and captured Super Bowl XLIV in 2009, building a foundation for continued success, on and off the field.

Learn how to read correctly & put things in it's proper context.

Just saying what fans of a college team that didn’t follow the Saints may have said, Brod. He did pay up to bring in a big name GM in Finks after all

That said, I’m not sure I agree with your assessment of Finks. He was a great GM that helped build that defense with Mora.

He also tried to draft offense, notably Rueben Mayes, Hilliard, Steve Walsh and others. Sure Walsh didn’t pan out but he was trying.

Plus, cheap skate didn’t really apply back before FA anyway. You had to build through the draft.

How long will he be there though?
Joe will win at least one super bowl before he retires. He has that type of determination and desire.
Which team will he be with- Who knows?

If that were the case with every professional athlete, no one would ever asked be traded out of toxic organizations & free agency would have never came about.

Oh boy. You don't get it. Not even close to what I was saying. If you were a talent like Burrow and someone came up to you and said you are going to be an all pro quarterback but will bounce around playing on bad teams. You will never win a conference title or a Super Bowl but you will be worth 100 million bucks. I promise you you would be okay with having expirienced the disappointment. If you say different, you friend are a liar.

Gotcha

Yes Benson did but Finks had his flaws.

quote:

That said, I’m not sure I agree with your assessment of Finks.

You may not agree with my assessment but it's on the money. Finks was an old school, chain smoking, hard arse who thought the old way was always the right way. I will show you why below.

quote:

He also tried to draft offense, notably Rueben Mayes, Hilliard, Steve Walsh and others. Sure Walsh didn’t pan out but he was trying.

At all of his stops as GM, Vikings, Bears & Saints, Finks showed to have a better eye for defensive talent than offensive talent. He helped create some all time great defenses at each of his stops while the offenses on the otherhand left a lot to be desired.

quote:

Plus, cheap skate didn’t really apply back before FA anyway. You had to build through the draft.

Again, his ability to scout & draft offensive talent was below average. He also made one of the biggest blunders in Saints history with how he handled the Bobby Hebert situation in 1990. The egotistical, chain smoking SOB let his emotions of holding a grudge against Hebert hurt the franchise tremendously.

Instead of trading Hebert (the Raiders offered the Saints Marcus Allen & a 2nd round pick for Hebert) or just signing him back outright, Finks set out to show Hebert & Tom Benson who was really the boss instead of doing what was in the best interest of the franchise.

quote:

The next week in Detroit, Hebert continued to struggle, Jim Mora benched him, as the Saints lost 21-14 and didn’t score in the second half. So enter the local kid, John Fourcade, to start at quarterback in Buffalo. In the snow, Fourcade threw for 300 yards and 2 scores as the Saints won 22-19. He was just as good the next week on Monday night football, throwing 3 touchdowns as the Saints defeated the playoff-bound Philadelphia Eagles. In the season finale. He threw two more scores and ran for another as the Saints routed the Indianapolis Colts 41-6.

The New Orleans Saints, it seemed, would have a full blown quarterback controversy heading into 1990, except Bobby Hebert didn’t have a contract and free agency was just something the players were working to get.

quote:

While fans might have been expecting a training camp battle between Fourcade and Hebert, the one person who wasn’t expecting it was Bobby Hebert. He fully expected to get shipped out of town.

“I really thought the Saints would trade me off, but I had no idea what would eventually happen. I just wanted to get paid like most starting quarterbacks in the league and I had skins on the wall. Jim Finks felt as though he owned me for my football life. Gil Brandt, with the Cowboys, had a saying that players are like cattle and owners are like ranchers. Ranchers can always get more cattle. That was Finks' mentality too. I just wanted to get paid like most starting NFL quarterbacks and because Fourcade had some success late (Finks) didn't feel as though I should get paid that kind of money.”

quote:

Jim Finks, had other ideas. Mike Detillier explains how Finks operated. “Jim Finks was old school and he was going to make Bobby pay the price. What got Bobby really upset was that the Oakland Raiders had a good deal on the table to trade for him and he would have gotten market value and Finks refused to trade him off because of spite.

quote:

He wanted to break Bobby's case and felt others were going to learn a lesson from it. It was a matter of principle. Finks had the ultimate voice. Tom Benson wanted the Saints to come to a deal with Bobby, but Finks in his contract had the final say on football matters. Finks was head strong to win without Bobby and even at the expense of his team.”

quote:

Jim Finks told me something smart about being a surrogate for Bobby because we grew up on the bayou together. I just felt he needed to add firepower offensively for Bobby and get him a deep threat. He bristled mightily with my thoughts, along with Buddy D's and Finney's.”

quote:

Oakland offered future Hall of Fame running back Marcus Allen and a 2nd round draft pick.

quote:

“Finks refused to trade him. He wanted Bobby crawling back at his price to play football with the Saints. He knew Bobby grew up in Louisiana, had a home here, his family was here and thought he could break him down. It didn't happen.”

quote:

Finks traded first, second, and third round draft picks to the Dallas Cowboys for Steve Walsh.

quote:

“Finks told me he had zero regrets. Finks wanted to get his point across, similar to what he did in Minnesota with Joe Kapp (Finks was GM of the Vikings when they played in Super Bowl IV after the 1969 season). Kapp got them to the Super Bowl and wanted market value and Jim Finks balked.

quote:

Finks, along with Jim Mora put the Saints on the football map but he really disliked players pushing the envelope for money.

He just would not adjust to the changing NFL. What he didn't figure on was Hebert's hard stance and that the players would win in court. That court case cost him his shot to be NFL commissioner. The new school owners wanted free agency because they built their fortunes far different from the old school owners. They felt free agency gave them a chance to win quicker.”

Sorry for the long post & numerous quotes from that article but hopefully that provides some clarity on Jim Fink's time with the Saints, the mistakes he made as GM & my assessment of him in my previous post.
