Skip not only built LSU baseball from nothing….it could be argued that he is a foundational piece to building college baseball to the heights it’s at now. You mentioned “it’s more competitive now bc schools invest more” (paraphrase).
You know why they invest more, Skip Bertman showed them that a football crazy fan base can fall in love with baseball and make it a profitable sport.
As others have said, no need to compare or minimize Skip in order to appreciate Jay.

Who the freak minimized skip?

I understand what he was trying to say but once you get to Omaha the teams that have invested heavily in baseball are there so you beat those teams. May not have been as many as there are now but once you get to Omaha they are there.

It’s going to be tough for anyone to surpass Skip’s legacy in the sport—just like it was nearly impossible to top Bear Bryant in College Football until Saban rewrote the script at Bama starting in ’07.
If Jay keeps this momentum and ends up with five championships during his tenure, then we can start having the conversation about him overtaking Skip. But for now, that conversation feels way too early.

quote:that makes it harder in Jays predicament in my opinion. I do not put him on skips level just yet though, however if he rattles off 5 national championships in 10 years like skip did then yeah, Jays in a HoF top tier. It’d be like Saban going to Bama and surpassing bear, something you never thought could be done
Pump the brakes kid. Skip did it with more homegrown talent and not as much national recruiting.
Jay is a damn good coach though

I don’t think there is an intent to knock Skip. Lord, there is no LSU baseball and legacy without the immeasurable impact of Skip Bertman. 40+ years after his arrival, this program remains competitive at the highest level. He is foundational
as the architect of greatness.
College baseball is more competitive today, greater parity and the portal makes it a year round job. In that environment Jay Johnson is one of the best operators and is working to build on the record of success and championships.

Skip built the program. There's a reason kids like Curiel want to come from Cali to play here even once the money leveled the playing field. In Skip's time, most schools were playing with who they had in state outside of a few players. Now you can pay Bear to come to LSU vs playing for Georgia

Lmao, let me guess you also think Cannon and Pete were overrated. This is a troll, has to be.

I made the mistake and wanted Louisville's head coach at the time the job was open. I am here to eat crow. JJ is going to win multiple NCs

Yeah ,ok! Won’t waste my time replying to your stupid respond.

Good you already spent too much time posting idiotic takes as it is.

What an a-hole you seem to be.

quote:Absolutely I’m not shitting on Skips legacy either, just noting that rattling off nattys in mid-2020s is tougher than in the early 90s when college baseball wasn’t what it is today. LSU is what it is because of Skip regardless what Jay accomplishes but there’s a lot more investment in the sport today than there was back then which makes the competition level higher and tougher to rattle off titles.
Skip built the program
Like I said I wouldn’t put him on Skip’s level yet but has the potential to get there if he continues to make it to Omaha at least 50% of the time and bring in a title every few years
quote:my point being that Jay’s competing daily on bringing these guys to lsu rather than going elsewhere. Back in the day you could just do it with homegrown talent without having to compete for these kids
Now you can pay Bear to come to LSU vs playing for Georgia
ETA Jay skips family weddings to make recruiting trips. You gotta appreciate the devotion to LSU. Skip was the best coach in the sport in his time, I’d say Jay is the best available today. Glad he’s on our side. The Powerhouse is in great hands

Go look at teams who were powerhouses in the 70s, 80s and 90s….. who many are winning titles through 3 of the last 4 coaches following a legend?
