Jennings' game play an argument for getting your backup meanigful snaps?

I think most of us are a bit taken aback to just how "off" Jennings played yesterday. After seeing him come out and win the Arkansas game, some had expectations that were a little out of reach.
However, I believe most expected him to be a competent QB who though a true freshman, would make safe passes and rely on the run game. While the second part is true, he did not throw the ball well (many passes were innacurate and high)and really didn't exhibit great awareness, sometimes taking sacks when he had time to throw the ball.
That said, many on here clammored for Miles to give AJ meanigful game expereince during our routes of teams. The first two blowout games are difficult (UAB and Kent St) since you want Mett to get the snaps to get his timing down. Hoever, AJ should have been taken over in the 4th quarter and allowed to run plays other than a QB kneel.
Two other games he should have gotten major playing time would have been Furman and also at the end of the Texas A&M game.
Those four games were well decided going into the 4th, and AJ could have benfited greatly.
Next year will be interesting, and now the argument will be "get AJ all the reps so he can develop." I like his attitude on Twitter and do hope he will work hard this offseason.

Argument for wishing Gunner Keil would have stayed committed to LSU

You get backups mop-up reps so that when they get into a game at a critical point they won't have a problem with things like taking care of the ball, getting the play off on time, no false starts, no communication errors, etc. Jennings didn't have issues with any of that yesterday.

He definitely needs some additional game experience before I will feel confident with him at the helm. Of course, I didn't think he would light the world on fire in his first start like some on this board did. He basically had a couple of passes in the Arkansas game, with the game winner going to a receiver that was open by 20 yards.
What I didn't like was how the OC used him. If he is a mobile QB, give him a few read options, move the pocket with some roll outs, etc. to let him use his feet to his advantage.
Hopefully, he can work on his pocket awareness and accuracy in the off season, because we will likely be without Hill, Landry, and OBJ next year.

It was a true freshman's first start in wet conditions, in basically a meaningless game. Not the end of the world the way he played.

may have helped, may not have.
Mauck got some meaningful PT in 01 behind Ro, and then was pretty inconsistent passing the first half of 02 as a starter (6 games, 4 were less than 50% completions). it happens with new starters.
that said, I'd like to have seen Jennings get more snaps.

You could say the same thing in 2011 when we were absolutely routing teams and Mett barely got to play at all.

No clean up reps get your prepared for being the "the guy", I don't care what the morons on this board seem to think

I think in college the backup should always get reps if the game is well in hand.
Mett getting reps was something we all wanted.

Yeah, he's gonna light it up at Cincy, right?

Just think about if Mett had played more than what amounted to a quarter of football in 2011 how he might have looked to start 2012. He should have gotten some reps in the NC game but that is a whole other matter altogether.

This. If it mattered, all teams would do it.

considering it took him till the Bama game to really get going, I'd say not much at all...

This too, especially with no first team reps. He would have had zero timing with the receivers and a pretty nasty pass rush in his face. Would have been terrible.

And clean up reps are not "meaningful" snaps
meaningful snaps means the pressure on you to score and lead the team, not just run out the clock.

which is why I would want something more than just "clean up" reps for the backup.
He should be able to go in, and try to lead a scoring drive. Let the OC treat it like a normal drive and mix in runs and passes, not three runs and a punt. Something to let the guy get some real game day experience.

oh god
I can only imagine the meltdown if Miles let Jennings come in during a close game and Jennings screw up

That's Les, does it very year. Never gives his back up qb a chance to get experience for next year. This will never change so get used to it. Any one remember JJ ?

That's not going to do anything to get someone ready for an actual pressure situation where a defense has prepared to stop you.

So why do no big time coaches do it if it's such an obvious no brainer?
