——Yesterday’s game was Jay Johnson’s 250th as LSU’s head baseball coach. Get this: his record is exactly the same as Skip Bertman’s first 250 games, 177-73, which is now tied for the best in program history.

Skip had to build it. Not the same but good on Jay.

CJJ has to build it every year.

I also heard the Kim Mulkey is Kramer’s mom. I’m not sure if that’s true?

No but he was the biggest baby ever born in Louisiana

That’s a fair point, but a counterpoint is that the competition is way tougher (thanks in large part to Skip’s work to popularize college baseball).

I love Jay.
If you want to talk truly impressive, Tony Vitello has the highest winning percentage of any coach in SEC history-'- better than previous leader Skip Bertman. And he had to build it. Put your personal feelings about him aside-- that is crazy.

True, but the SEC is also a lot better as a conference with more teams than it was back then as well. So have to factor that in as well.

The two situations aren’t comparable because of multiple factors. Skip built the program up from the bottom without the money and support that is available today. There’s no way to compare anything today to that situation.
All that said, Skip wasn’t in an SEC that was on the same planet in terms of overall competitiveness. Around half of the conference gave a shite at any given time and most of the rest was bad or worse until the mid to late 90s. Today, there are 15 programs, all with a ton of TV contract money at their disposal, invested in success in baseball. Just look at how the SEC is dominating recruiting and titles in the sport this decade.
Again, these are two totally different accomplishments. None of the above should minimize anything that either coach did. They are just two completely different eras with more differences than similarities.
As for Jay, he has restored the level of play here quickly and is on track to be better and more consistent than PM was in an even deeper and tougher SEC. That is definitely a worthy accomplishment.

This and all college athletics are more difficult to field a constant competitive team with player mobility and compensation, at least from a depth standpoint.

I measure greatness with championships...not doing well in the regular season and choking in post season.

You make a good point but don’t expect a lot of upvotes because most of the rant can’t differentiate between a point like you made and still being true tiger fans.

True, but the SEC wasn't what it currently is back then.

I used to read DD back when the internet first started. Since he died and his son took over and TD came around I just don’t go to that page. The stuff he reports are things I found out on here days before.
