Odell is the better athlete while Jarvis is the best football player. They just have different skill sets, and are both highly effective.

You might not care, but you're going to hear it, anyway. Excluding professional success (which has nothing to do with who is the greatest WR at LSU), Josh Reed was, and is, the best in LSU history. And, frankly, it's really not close.

this is a joke right? Have you ever seen him block? What about speed? How about making the incredible catch?
Reed was a good route runner and had a QB that had an ALL PRO talented Oline to get him the ball on all those freaking bubble screens Jimbo used to throw. He was like a poor mans Alvin Kamara.
BOTH OF THESE GUYS WERE SECPOY!
Wendell Davis and Carlos Carson has eleite speed, were excellent route runners and exceptional blockers.

I don’t remember Ken Kavanough like my dad did, but HE STILL HOLDS THE BEARS RECORD FOR TDS ANS YPC FROM THE 1940’s!
Learn your fricking history or just shut up.

It's rare that I break civility in responding to people, but your post is just down right pathetic.

what kind of blocker was Reed? I don't remember, because I tend to use blocking ability to grade offensive linemen and tight ends.

And you don't remember much of anything about Reed, that much is very clear. He was not only a great route runner, he had INCREDIBLE hands. I saw him make many circus catches, and he didn't drop anything. He caught long and short passes, and he was phenomenal in yards after catch. Remember the game where he had 293 yards against Alabama? Because I sure do. And who cares who played on that offensive line? Because out of all the great teams in the history of the SEC, Josh Reed STILL holds the SEC single season record for receiving yards.

Are you seriously arguing with me on this? And you reference a guy from the 40's who holds a couple of Bears records? Does he hold LSU records? What part of "excluding professional success" did you not understand from my post? I noted that carefully, because if we're going by who had the best pro career, it's a COMPLETELY different conversation. Who in their right mind wouldn't say that Pete Maravich is the greatest basketball player in LSU history? No one. But if we go by pro career, he's probably third best.

So try staying within the parameters of this discussion involving greatest WR in *LSU* history.

"Yeah, but so and so had speed, and that guy could block". Yeah? Were they the best at getting open and producing? No, because that distinction belongs to Reed.

Josh Reed after the catch any day over Odell and Jarvis...

Other than maybe blocking there is not a single thing Jarvis does on a football field better than Odell unless we're going to go back to college and talk about ST tackling, which he doesn't do anymore. That's not a knock on Jarvis, but Odell is a top 5 WR in the NFL. Jarvis is not.

This same argument is posted on this board every few weeks. People continuously interject who they like more into their opinion of who is better at their position. Almost reminds me of the Jamarcus/Flynn debates. Yes, I wish Odell had the same attitude Jarvis does, but that does not make Jarvis a better football player.

As for best WR to ever play for LSU, disregarding NFL success or lack thereof, there is only one answer and that is Josh Reed. There is no argument, at all, for anyone else to be listed above him. Dude held the career yardage mark in the SEC for awhile having only played 2 seasons at the position and not even getting to include his bowl stats (add over 300 more if he did include those). Also not including bowl stats, he still holds the single season mark for yards. Add his Sugar Bowl game and he amassed just short of 2000 yards in 2001.

I'll take Josh Reed in route running, hands, and YAC over anyone LSU's ever had, and there is no one at the college level who I'd put ABOVE him, for sure.

The only thing he lacked was elite speed. But he was so good at everything else, it didn't matter, because no one could hang with him.

That last guy was trying to use speed as an argument for why others were somehow better than Reed. I wonder if he ever watched Jerry Rice play. I grew up, not knowing till much later what Rice's 40 time was, thinking that he was one of the fastest people on Earth, because he was always leaving guys in a cloud of dust. I was shocked when I found out he was timed at 4.7 something, coming out of college. But, as everyone should know by now, he was a master of his craft and his precision made fools of the competition.

Jarvis is a better slot, Odell is better on the outside.

He wasn't even slow. he ran a 4.54 at the combine. For reference, Odell ran a 4.43 and Jarvis ran a 4.65 (4.51 at his pro day). Also maybe a point of reference, Fournette ran a 4.51 at the combine. While a 4.54 isn't "elite," it's still plenty fast, especially when your skill set is route running and yards after the catch. Reed weighed 210 pounds and was built like the running back he was recruited to be. And I've never seen a college receiver at LSU always wide arse open like Reed was.

That BAMA team was garbage - so fricking what. In 2001, they did improve on 3-8 the year before and went 7-5.
Reed made first team all SEC but Davis and Ken Kavanaugh were SEC POY. There have only been 4 receivers to EVER make POY or Offensive POY and those were Wendell davis, Ken Kavanaugh, Bob Goodridge and Aramr Cooper (He was offensive). THATS IT.
You can go search that list and you will quickly find out that there are only a handful of receivers that were that good.
And defining the “greatest includes ALL ASPECTS
OF THE GAME INCLUDING BLOCKING DUMBASS. Landry is an incredible run blocker, but he couldn’t take the top off the defense like Carson or Davis could and both of those guys OWNED their counter parts in a run first offensive philosophy.

Carlos Carson had 5 catches for 5 TDs in his first game at LSU.
He ran a 4.3 forty that was legit. He wasn’t selected to the Chiefs HOF for no reason a-hole.
The list is as follows:
Davis
Carson
Kavanough (before you run your trap go look at his YPC and TDs that are STILL BEARS RECORDS TODAY).
Landry
Reed

One thing jarvis does better than Odell is actually play in football games and not sit on the sideline and pout. Say what you will about Odell's amazing catches in the NFL but Jarvis has and always will have better hands. He's the one that started Odell on catching balls with one hand from the ball machine after practice.
