In a similar fashion, Gerry Dinardo should get more credit than he is typically accorded for restoring LSU to national prominence.

GN dropped the ball at the end of his LSU coaching career for whatever the reason, but when some seek to lump him in with CH I have to wonder what LSU football program they have been following.

And Faulk's decision to go to LSU, with things the way they were for LSU, should be a Louisiana holiday.

As well as some fans who don't appreciate a young man who loves LSU enough to put his baseball career in jeopardy to play football.

I remember a thread on the old Geaux board by players who played for Curley. It was ugly.

His senior year we went 7-4-1, Herb Tyler won all 4 games he started that year.

I met Derriel McCorvey once at a continuing legal education seminar in Lafayette. He was a great guy to talk to, and played for both Archer and Hallman. When asked about Curley, he obviously has a stock response, "He almost brought the LSU football program down, single handed." He shook his head and said he'd prefer not to dwell on the bad things surrounding his playing days. Overall he's a bright and positive guy, but has little good to say about Curley.

I don't think he was "crazy" about the guy, if you know what I mean.

Derriel McCorvey is a very good person and was a fine player. If you see him again you can ask him if he remembers how the Depth Chart would change on game days or the Auburn game when we had their asses whipped and Hallman threw his famous prevent defense that helped their all conference kicker win the game for them as the clock ran out. Hallman was a nut case.

People forget that Auburn game and Howard in 1992. Auburn wasn't that good that year and was up 27-7.Howard was a true freshman and hadn't played vs A&M and State and they were talking about redshirting him. Jesse Daigle started and was awful, Chad Loup started and was awful . Not sure if Ryan Huffman played but Howard came in in the third and put us up 28-27 with about 1:00 left and like the above poster said, the prevent let Stan White get them to the 25 or 30 and Scott Etheridge kicked a fg with :04 left.

Jamie is a good guy, he and I have done lots of business together good and bad. He loves LSU and has some great stories. The Auburn game was a nightmare for him, but he came back and redeemed himself.

Met Jamie in Laffy after his Soph or Jr year at LSU. I was pitching at a JUCO in MS and all he wanted to do was talk about me being a closer and how u had to have brass balls to be good at it. Genuinely a good guy.

It's crying shame that so called fans will demean kids who gave everything they had for the fans entertainment. The real bastards are the cheap/lazy administration that hired coaches for one of the top programs, that couldn't coach a HS team.

Coaches should have never put Jamie in the position of throwing the ball so much. The game was won, just run the ball! No one can possibly know how bad it was for Jamie after that game! It took a lot of guts just to go back to class!!

This is the worst post I've seen on the rant in a long while.

Trust me, that's a big deal.

Great guy and excellent businessman. He was wildly successful in sports and will also be in business.

Anyone who has a negative comment about Jamie, has never met him.

Wow. I'm sensing plenty of bandwagon jerks in this thread. Howard was not a star QB, by any stretch, but he really stepped up his game in 95. For those with short memories, he really played a solid game against Auburn to follow up his personal nightmare the year before. That took a lot of guys. The entire stadium would have unloaded on him if he had choked again, but he didn't. he stood up to the pressure, and helped the Tigers get a HUGE upset win that put them back on the college football map. Don't be stupid and minimize that.

For those who want to go by the numbers, Howard was injured less than halfway through the season, but continued to try and play until I think the Bama game finished him off. I was at the game, and he played with a lot of guts. He took a beating, as I recall. Bama had one of those amazing defenses that year, and the game was on the road, so I'm sure that wasn't any fun.

Also, for those who think the Tigers wouldn't have missed Howard early in the season, I was at the UK game in Lexington where Melvin Hill was inserted as the starter when Howard couldn't go, and Tyler wasn't seen as a viable option yet. It was a total freakin disaster. LSU would have destroyed UK if Howard had been able to play. The Tigers dominated the first half, but the offense stumbled around with Hill looking terrible, the D got tired, and then we lost to a really bad team.

My point? People look at the record and jump to conclusions about Jamie Howard. Look a little deeper. The guy played a big role and getting the momentum going for what turned out to be a very important season for Tiger football. Herb Tyler did an excellent job coming in as an unheralded freshman, but don't forget that Howard's work and success against a few tough opponents help build some hope that a bowl game was possible.

I'm glad Howard beat auburn the next year, that win really gave LSU confidence to get rid of a loser mentality. As far as turning the program around Faulk was big but also we had a hungry defense with Stansberry, Gabe Nothern, guillard. Offense having big David lafleur, and Eddie Kennison didn't hurt either.

Jamie Howard got a free ride to LSU doing what he loved to do, supposedly. no telling all the finge beneifts he also received. hey, he practiced. in games, he lifted his arm up and threw the ball down the field, he handed off the ball. sometimes he even got tackled, but he always sweated a lot, all for the tigers, so let's praise him just for wearing the purple and gold. but let's not revise history and say he was anything but a miserable qb in a miserable time. he was garbage and his stats back it up. I'm sorry, but i expect more than garbage from my favorite team's qb. herb tyler came in the next year and by i think it was the kent. game which was like the third, fourth game showed more ability, more heart, more balls than Jamie had in his four years. Jamie may be a good guy, good for him, glad he's not emotionally scarred from hsi time on the team, but if i called myself a qb and took a scholarship to play at lsu and played like him, then i would be pretty humble around town too.

Spoke with Jamie this week at a function and I always thought his deciding to return for his Sr. year in 1995 instead of pitching for the Braves was the most important move in the revival of LSU football- even bigger than K. Faulk's signing.

Dude, you were born in 1993.

I was a student at LSU in 1995 and I can assure you that Kevin Faulk's signing was a huge deal. Also, LSU finally made inroads in NOLA and landed a QB by the name of Herb Tyler. Tyler took over for an injured Howard late in the 95 season and went on to win 26 of the next 31 games he started.

I'm not going to knock Jamie but it's the height of insanity to say Jamie Howard staying on in 1995 was the "most important move" in reviving our program in 1995.

The biggest move in 1995 was hiring DiNardo in December 1994. He instantly got people pumped up with his "Bring Back The Magic" campaign, signed some big recruits like Tyler, Faulk and McFarland. And early in that season, we scored a HUGE (at the time) win over Auburn at home that got the fans really believing that we were about to turn the corner. At the time, LSU's season turned heavily on the Auburn game -- something that people who suffered during Curley's regime remember all too well.

I'm glad Jamie got to beat Auburn that year. He deserved a chance to redeem himself. But let's not go crowning him the savior of LSU in 1995. He wasn't. DiNardo deserves most of the credit.
